On the 30th we pulled out of Rio Grande Village and up to Chisos Basin. It was only about 30 miles, but elevation goes from 1850' to 5400'! The Chisos Mountains are like a mountain oasis in the midst of the the Chihuahuan Desert. Emory Peak is the highest point at 7825'.
We had waited a couple days for a cold spell to pass... we seem to be followed by atypical 'cold spells' across the country. We also had to strategize in order to get a campsite. About half of these two campgrounds are 'reservable' and this is about the busiest week of the year. Had lunch at the lodge restaurant again. Wonderful view, decent food, good opportunity to check emails, etc.
Next day we drove down to Panther Junction (10 miles) to use the phone, order meds, pay bills. Bought ourselves the Ken Burns DVD set of the National Parks. Our New Years gift to ourselves...
Night of the 31st was a gorgeous Blue Moon! (the second full moon in a month... they only happen every 2.7 years!). Drove out of the park to Terlingua for New Years dinner. Ate a nice meal at the Starlight Theatre in the old 'ghost town'. Went and heard some music at La Kiva... a semi-underground cave of a tavern. Drove home under the blue moon and in bed before midnight. Old fogies. Happy New Year!
New Years Day we hiked out the Window Trail... 5 miles with 500' elevation rise on the return. Spectacular. I run out of adjectives describing this park. Saw the Black-crested Titmouse on this hike. Fabulous place.
The road getting in suggests no trailers over 20'... no RV's over 24'. I saw some bigger ones in here... but the road is tight and steep.
