Drove up from 29 Palms, only about 60 miles. Did about 8 miles on the old, original Route 66, through the town of Amboy. Hope to see more of it on the way east. The Mojave Preserver is the newest (1994) and third biggest area (1.6 million areas) of federal lands in the the lower 48 states. We camped in Hole-In-the-Wall Campground at 4400'. So named by a previous member of Butch Cassidy's 'Hole-In-the-Wall Gang' from Wyoming, because it reminded him of his old hide-out. One day we drove the Wild Horse Canyon road. Parts of it were swept by a desert wildfire in 2005. Even the burned out trunks of the Juniper had a stark beauty in the desert light. Checked out the smaller campground of Mid-Hills, partially burned but the half that wasn't was very nice. Cozy sites, not for big trailers, tucked in among the Junipers and rocks, some with a view onto the lower desert. No one was there! There were still patches of snow on the ground in this higher desert (5200'). Next day we drove all around the Preserve. Up an over some dirt roads to the tiny town of Cima (store was closed)... up the road to SR 15 and down to the Cima road exit (where we paid $4.00 a gallon for gas... highest of the trip thus far)... back down to Cima and down the Kelbaker Road, through Kelso with its restored railway depot... and on to the Kelso Dunes, down to Sr 40 and back around to camp... for a total of 160 miles! The roads north out of Cima go through the largest and most densely populated Joshua Trees forests in the country! Also saw the largest Joshua Trees I had seen anywhere. Strange that this impressive stand is not in Joshua Tree National Park! There are Desert Bighorn Sheep and Desert Tortoises in this Preserve, but thus far, we have not seen any. Another day we drove up to Mitchell Caverns which is a State Recreation Area in the Providence Mountains, within the Mojave Preserve. Tour was sold out so we didn't get to see the caverns. First two nights were 35º and the next night and day were very windy with gusts reaching 50 mph.
