Drove over from the Salton Sea, over the north side of the lake, through Mecca (now we can say we made our pilgrimage to Mecca , down the west side and west on Hwy S22 to Borrego Springs... about 66 miles. See map for route & roads.
Pretty nice campground, just outside the cute little town of Borrego Springs. $25 a night for no electric, water spigots, flush toilets and pay showers! Kinda high. But we got a $2 senior discount... woo-hoo!
Thursday we hiked 3 miles up into Palm Canyon and back. A year-around creek runs down and there is an oasis of California Fan Palms... amazing! Saw some new (as yet unidentified) little birds, a new lizard... but no Peninsular Big Horn Sheep. Darn!
One evening we drove 4 miles out a sandy dry wash to Fonts Point which overlooks some badlands... great view and sunset! Another day we drove out a bit S.E. of town and hiked into a 'slot canyon'. A very tight fit, squeezing sideways in many places. Nice park with lots of trails and things to do. Perhaps another time we'll come back and do more exploring. This is one of the rare parks where you can literally camp anywhere in the back country you want to! But summer temps commonly reach 115º. Highs are around 124º!
