Even if it's within the overall tow rating, you'd probably be over the rear axle limit of the Jeep with the trailer's tongue weight.
Thanks, I agree and I have mentioned all the impediments to towing with an undersized vehicle.
In 1998 I owned a regular travel trailer and we drove a big Pontiac Station Wagon. My three boys were very young and my wife and I took them camping in Colorado. That Pontiac was way underpowered to tow that 20' trailer we owned at the time and it struggled at high altitude being a normally aspirated vehicle.
Over the past 30 years, I have owned two Airstream trailers and always towed with a F-150 truck fitted out with a tow package.
I have tried to convince my friend that he is making a mistake and still he persists. He sent me a link to a Jeep Forum this morning where various members extol the the towing capacity of their Eco Diesel Jeeps. What he does not seem to understand it its not just the vehicles ability to tow the trailer, its the payload, the TW, the load on the suspension and tire walls etc.
What really bothers me is the dealership that has the trailer in stock are always showing the various tow vehicles such as a Tesla (heaven forbid), a Chrysler Mini Van hauling a 30' AS and even a Ford Taurus hauling a 25' AS which is what they demonstrated to us when we purchased our 1997 25' Safari.
Sure, it can move the trailer but, on a steep incline or long downgrade I believe the trailer will be a real handful and actually become very dangerous.
I am afraid that no matter what I say, he may go ahead and buy that 30' tomorrow. I hope he will consider a new TV and realize sooner than later that the Jeep is not really the correct vehicle for such a large trailer.
Regards,
Keith S.
