Want to remove antennae

Posted 12-02-2008 at 09:40 PM by imeynstein

Hey, I have a 1974 Sovereign that has an old antennae. Problem is, I have a leak from the 'crank' on the interior, and since the antennae is somewhat 'outdated' due to the high definition crap, I would like to remove it. Has anyone else done this, and if so, could you please tell me step by step how to remove it and to patch the area of the 'crank'. I have Vulkem and an aluminum patch as well as a rivet gun, however I have not used it ! Please help!!!

I removed the television antenna from my 71 Caravel. I had to scrape many layers of applied goo from the roof where well meaning previous owners had applied sealant. The antenna was secured to the roof with sheet metal screws. On the inside of the trailer, I removed the handle and then the trim ring from the ceiling. Under the trim ring, there is an e-clip that I pried off the shaft with a screwdriver. This releases the shaft so it can be removed from the roof to the outside.
I had made a round patch from some anodized aluminum that I had lying around. I cleaned the area well before installing the patch with a putty knife scraper and mineral spirits. I applied a liberal amount of Vulkem to the roof area where antenna had been mounted. I secured the patch with new stainless steel screws and sealed with Vulkem. An additional patch will be needed where the antenna lead wires go into the roof. Kevin

Thanks!!! I will let you know how it turns out. Lately it has been raining like crazy where I live so I will have to wait until the sun returns.
I, too, noticed that the p.o. had placed tons of what appears to be roofing tar. It is black and so hard that I can not scrape it off. Is there some type of solvent I can use that will soften this??? I don't want to damage the skin, and this stuff is like concrete that is around the antenna on the roof....
My other question is, I can't get any of the lights to come on in the front/living room nor will the exterior 'night light' come on. I replaced all of my fuses, and this did nothing. My batteries are fully charged, but I currently have my AS hooked up to electricity as I am doing work on the interior with a few power tools....
