Day 11 of the 2010 trip

6 days in the Tetons with no hookups and it’s time to continue to new locations…
Looking at a topo map at one of the visitor centers, we decided to skip Yellowstone, the northern exit and the associated circus…
Head South Young Feller!
There’s still time to loop thru Arches, Moab, Monument Valley and still make it back to Mississippi by Labor Day, gotta go to work after that…
So we exit Jackson on Hwy 191 and head toward the day’s goal of Vernal UT. The High Point of the day was seeing the fresh snow on top of the Bridger Mountains, SE of Jackson WY. The rest was a bit of a blurrrrrrr
It seems there was one little item we overlooked…
Flaming Gorge and our dislike of looking DOWN…
For my flatlander kin folk…7 miles of 10% grade with 10 switchbacks AFTER ya go up, up, up does NOT make for a good days travel…
The Vernal KOA missed a huge profit margin…watch for twitching travlers that arrive from the north, then double the prices…I would have paid what ever they asked for a FLAT, LEVEL campsite (I hadn’t seen flat or level all afternoon)

Flat and level is over-rated--the steep grades give you something to talk about when you get home
When I was a teenager, we went up the Beartooth Pass in our '74 Lincoln and a 26 ft sob and camped in Yellowstone. Being from BC, I loved the climb and switchbacks up the mountainside. My aunt and uncle from Saskatchewan followed in their truck and trailer. As flatlanders, they were white as ghosts when they got to the summit! As a kid, I thought that was totally strange.Posted 09-02-2010 at 09:52 PM by 4slice
