Day 9 of the 2010 Trip

Today forecast rain so we figured some truck touring would be appropriate. We elected to head toward Jenny Lake and on to the Moose Visitor Center. The first stop was actually at the Jackson Lodge where we found 3G coverage and uploaded emails and yesterdays Blog entry. The next stop was Willow Overlook were we saw a couple of dozen Elk feeding in the grass flats. Then onto Jenny Lake for some snap shots as the low clouds blew past the peaks. We decided that tomorrow would be a good day to hike to Inspiration Point, we would have gone today but some silly dog was with us and the rules say he can’t go…
Meandering toward the Moose Visitor center with dark clouds looming, a traffic jam notified us that wildlife was roadside…MOOSE! A cow and her calf were posing for the tourist (that would be us)
By the time we got to the visitor center huge drops of rain were spattering the windshield, lightning was popping and the clouds were low and dark so we headed back north toward camp. A bite of lunch and a nap rounded out the first part of the day. Just before sunset the rain stopped, the skies cleared so we grabbed our Meade ETX 120 telescope, a tripod and drove back to Willow Overlook. I figured I could mount the telescope on the tripod and use it for a spotting scope…it worked ok, good enough to see the bull elk with velvet still covering the racks. Once again, black clouds and thunder ran us back to the camp. A candle light supper of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, the sound of thunder plus raindrops on the roof will wrap up the day. More tomorrow…
