1959 tradewind on the road

Day 44 - Thu Sep 9 2010
Another warm morning, and a slow day. Nothing too exciting, laundry and hubby fixed the gaucho couch. Some of the nails had come loose and the wooden frame was hanging in several places!!! Some of those bumps on the road are CRAZY ! ! He got it repaired and now it`s stronger than ever. The laundry room at the Starlite Classic Campground is modern with retro furnishings -- there is an old porcelain kitchen sink that works, and of course and iron and ironing board should you need it. Very cool.
We took a drive up through the mountains to Cripple Creek -- a beautiful truly old west town with lots of casinos. When we parked, we noticed the rear end of what looked like an Airstream. We walked over to see what it was. Well, we were very surprised to find a `63 Safari mounted on a new chassis and attached to an old 40-something truck. Sorry I can`t remember the exact year. We met the owner and his wife after he `caught`us peeking under the tarp over the front. He has a welding shop there in Cripple Creek he let us look around as much as we wanted. He even let me climb up inside to see it. Quite unique and quite beautiful. I would love to see it finished as it`s still a work of art in progress.
We had dinner across the street in one of the casino`s and only lost $20 on a Wheel of Fortune game. We took off back down the mountains before the sun set.
Day 45 Fri Sep 10 2010
Bright, sunny morning with hi`s in the mid to hi 80`s today. We took a short drive to Canon City (pronounced Canyon) and nearby Florence for breakfast. We couldn`t get it because we were too late -- it was after 11, like 11:05 to be exact. Anyway, we had lunch and then browsed through a couple of thrift and antique stores. We didn`t buy too much -- only one LP record album for $1. On the way back, we stopped at `The Well`, to see what it was about. We found out that it is a natural hot springs pool that is to be enjoyed au naturel. We got a short tour through the window of the place, and after DRAGGING hubby out of there, we returned to the Starlite Campground. We went to visit the owners in the office and bought their last pink flamingo. We couldn`t leave it there all by itself, we had to take `her`home. She`ll have many friends there. We drove just down the road to the White Water Bar & Grill for dinner. It is quite the place with HUGE log furniture. and the coolest outside patio. Some of the tables on the patio have little `firepits`on the table. Very nice. The food was great, the service was excellent and we ran into the owners of the Starlite there. We ended up back at out trailer for a campfire.
Day 46 - Sat Sep 11 2010
Another warm, sunny morning. We took another drive to Canon City and stopped at the Farmer`s Market and bought some garlic spice and fresh corn and tomatoes. We went back to the trailer for lunch, then back to `The Holy Cow Moosic Festival`in Canon City. The festival is put on as a bike toy run, sponsored in part by the Colorado Blues Society. It was hot, hot, hot, and the music was great. We left before dark, then when we got back the owners came by again for a farewell evening. It got late before we knew it.
Day 47 - Sun Sep 12 2010
Another sunny morning, and after we reluctantly said our goodbyes to The Starlite Classic Campground (just love that place), we were rolling by 10AM. We were heading east on US 50 and passed an Airstream being towed by a red truck just east of Pueblo at MM350. We didn`t get a blink, but we did get a wave. The mountains were slowly fading away behind us. We stopped in Lamar CO for lunch and hubby added another menu to his growing collection. We were in the flatland of cattle and cattle and more cattle. There were acres and acres and acres of feed farms for the cattle. We discovered that the scent is definitely cattle-related, and the flies are a BIG part of it all.
We crossed into Kansas about 2PM, and arrived in Dodge City Kansas about 5:30PM. We stopped at the Visitor`s Information at `Boot Hill`Western town, and asked about a campground. They directed us to Water Sports RV Park, right in town. We checked it out and decided to stay for 2 nights - $24 a night, full hookup with cable and wifi. We got a spot backing onto the Arkansas River and we could watch all the fish jumping, and the geese and ducks swimming. The katy-dids singing and the geese honking was incredible. Once settled, we had ribs leftover from the Holy Cow Moosic Festival in Canon City and corn we got at the Farmer`s Market there. We had so much food that we gave some to our neighbour in the park. He truly appreciated it.
Day 48 - Mon Sep 13 2010
Hot night - had the fans running all night, followed by a not morning. It was already 70 when we got up, and 90 by noon. We took a drive around Dodge City and found most stores either closed because it was Monday or closed period. After wandering around for awhile, we went back to the trailer for lunch, laundry and email. We had leftovers for dinner again. Another neighbour came by to talk Airstreams with us. He has a `66 and just loves it. We had a nice time.
Day 49 - Tue Sep 14 2010
Hot again!!! Rolling by 10:30AM and crossed the Missouri state line about 6PM -- a long, hot drive with lots of cattle. They call US 50 `The Loneliest Road in America`for a reason. We didn`t see a trailer park almost the whole way. We finally stopped in Sedalia to find the Happy Acres Trailer Park. When we found it, we found out that it is NOT an RV park, but a mobile home park. We couldn`t find a park anywhere, and finally agreed to spend the night in the Walmart lot in town. We had dinner at Applebee`s and settled in for the night.
Day 50 - Wed Sep 15 2010
It was a noisy, warm night in the Walmart lot -- no hydro, no fans. We were up and away by 8:30AM in search of a coffee. We thought we would head to St. Louis to visit a museum there. We crossed the Mississippi River about 2:30PM, following US 50 to US 67, to IL 16 to IL 4 (Old Rte 66) and then I-55 to Springfield Illinois. Once again, we couldn`t find an RV Park near St. Louis, so we moved along to Springfield. We arrived there about 4PM. The first campground the GPS gave us was closed permanently, and so we headed back south of Springfield to the Double J Campground -- the only RV park on the original Route 66. It`s a very nice park with full hookup with wifi and cable for $35 a night.
We barbequed Kansas steak for dinner. Very very good.

An overcast, breezy morning with hi`s in the 70`s today and the threat of rain.
We took a drive to see the sights in Springfield Illinois, the home of Abraham Lincoln. We drove downtown to see the Capitol Building and some shopping. We stopped at `World Famous Jungle Jim`s Cafe` for breakfast and stopped again at Shea`s Garage. We met Mr. Shea and his lovely wife and they gave us a tour of their place. It`s an old gas station with accompanying old little building full of gas station and nostalgic memorabilia. There is even a 1952 Airstream on the property that his son, who stopped by, is restoring. His grandson, a police officer, stopped by whiile we were there. We enjoyed our visit with all of them. Mr. Shea was very proud to show us around and explain everything to us. There is lots of èverything`in the shop. It was well worth the stop, and would highly recommend it. You never know how long a place like that will be there. We took the long way back, and stopped at Lisa`s Antique Mall, 138 consignment booths. Whew!!! We bought a few things there -- how can you go through that many booths and not buy anything. Back to the trailer for dinner and tv. The skies are still threatening rain.
