New chrome rubrail and what we found behind it ?

Posted 11-29-2018 at 08:49 PM by GMFL

So we finally got around to replacing the chrome rubrail on our 23D as it was starting to look a little ratty for our taste. No big deal right? Just order new rail pull off the old and stick on the new.....
Well it was what we found behind the rubrail that stopped us short of a quick project and turned this little clean up job into a half day job. The screws that Airstream used from the factory were just cheap raw metal screws and they were rusting quite bad. Now our trailer is stored under cover, out of the weather so this rust was caused from use using our unit and the times it rain on us while traveling.( duh these things are designed for rain, Right?). Well if it can be hidden and save a buck Airstream will hide and save.
We replaced ALL the raw metal screws in the rubrail with sikaflex and STAINLESS STEEL SCREWS. total cost for the screw replacement was $3.99 (and that was retail price for the screws). Anyway no since beating a dead horse. See the photos below and feel free to ask questions as always if you have any.

Just completed replacing the rub rail insert on my 27FB and ran into a similar issue with the screw material selection. Odd thing was about one in five of the screws used to secure the rub rail channel were the raw metal type (all rusted up of course), but the rest were shiny zinc coated that were in decent shape. Wondering if this was the case on your 23D as well. I replaced all (black and zinc) with stainless as well.

Some of mine were ok but most were trashed. I replaced them all.
