Remounting 23D medicine cabinet to prevent falling

A common problem either the medicine cabinets in Airstream trailers is they are mounted to the aluminum wall with small #8 screws. The vibration and bouncing of the trailer as it travels down the road can cause over time these screws to strip out or pull through the wall or backing. If the medicine cabinet falls off the wall while traveling it can cause damage to the flooring, counter top, lower cabinet, and mirror. A solution to this potentially catastrophic problem is to “harden up the way the cabinet is mounted. The back of the medicine cabinet was is made out of 1/8” plywood and is very thin. The screws that were holding my cabinet up had almost pulled through the wood. I used 1” stainless steel fender washers to prevent further damage and prevent the new machine screws from pulling through. Having these washers and screwheads exposed inside the cabinet will allow me to periodically inspect and tighten them if needed. I also used Rivnuts which are a threaded rivet that is installed in the wall that allows you to. Use a 10-32 machine screw to mount the cabinet. The Rivnuts are installed with a special Rivnut tool. They are easy to install and provide a great anchor point for anything you are mounting in the skin of your trailer. They are available from amazon or from Cardinal products https://www.cardinalcomponents.com/rivnut-kits.html

While dining this work I also took the time to through bolt the top hinge with a 6-32 machine screw to help reduce the pressure on the hinge from the gas shock which holds the upper cabinet open when open.
Thanks
Ronnie

Thank you for taking the time to make this post! So helpful. Our vanity fell off the wall while driving. Miraculously no damage to the floor or cabinet. Just broken mirror. You rock!

    Ronnie,

Similar problem with our bathroom cabinet, should i use steel or aluminum Rivenut, or does it matter.

    Thanks,

    Kevin
