Day 2 - August 9

Posted 08-16-2008 at 09:17 PM by dpandorf

We thought we'd get an early start, but no it didn't happen. However, we decided again to get a little farther than our original plan. Our total driving distance to Hill City, SD from our home base is around 1,600 miles and we decided to try and do 400 a day.

So today we got to the Trailside RV Park on the east side of Kansas City.

At our first diesel stop they had a weigh station. I've never weighed our rig and the place wasn't busy. So after filling up and everybody in the truck we headed over to the scaled. Almost needed a step ladder to reach the call button to tell them we were ready to be weighed. The numbers were pretty exciting as we were expecting the trailer to be over weight. Truck front axle: 5,240 lbs, rear axle: 5,200 lbs and the trailer weighed: 7520 lbs.

As we were leaving Kentucky I decided to call an old Marine Corps friend who lives in St Charles, MO. Since we needed to make a gas stop around that point thought it might make a convenient rendezvous. Well my friend and wife weren't busy and we were able to spend an hour or so reminiscing over old times. (It had been 17 years since we'd seen each other.)
