Little bit of body work and . . .

Posted 08-24-2009 at 06:51 PM by Dakota's Mom

Quick update.

We removed the rub rails and banana wrap, got some floor cut out and replaced. DH got the floor bolted up and the skin re-riveted (is that a word?). I was on caulk cleanup duty. (Who said silicone caulk won't adhere to aluminum?)

While we had the rub rail and banana wrap off, we did a little body work. Reshaped the dent from the trailer's run through an Arkansas creekbed on it's trip to Kansas, before it came to live with us. With the new piece of floor in, bolted up and riveted, everything seems to have lined up beautifully!

Wow, sounds great! Did you have to remove the banana wraps to put in the new pieces of floor? Just wondering because we seem to have a little rot we found under the bed, right along the back of the camper. I am hoping to dry it out and after caulking outside by the trunk where some say the leak happens, see if it stays dry. If it can't be salvaged, I was hoping to splice some pieces in without having to get underneath.

Oh, by the way. After we took the bed out, I noticed a little aluminum thing that looked like a half of a hotdog bolted to the inside wall right next to the outside access door. Under a little closer inspection, it was a light. I would never have known it was there and I thought I would pass it along in case you all hadn't seen yours.

We did have to take off the banana wrap so we could remove the existing bolts and secure the new floor to the c-channel. We replaced some floor and where it's more solid, we're using rid-rot to strengthen it. Then we'll paint on a coat of Kilz before putting down new flooring. We have some picture - I still need to get them posted!

Hrmm. Under our bed, we still have wood covering the whole thing so I think some rid-rot stuff will probably be enough. I think we are going to epoxy the entire area under the bed so we have some protection for the fllor from the stuff stored under there. I also need to figure out why the PO used spray foam in the spot you can see in the photo...
