today I hate my airstream

The fridge is burping right now, and let me tell you it wasn't easy getting it out.
To start out we knew there were 4 bolts in the floor you can see from the outside compartment. We also knew there was an L shaped piece of aluminum on the side that held the counter top to it. We removed the overhead cabinets and the cabinet on top the counter. Then we got the side piece off and the counter up and off. Then we tried lifting the fridge off the bolts and sliding blocks under to hold it up. We ran into a major problem as to figuring how the oven and fridge were held together and how to get them apart. We ended up cutting some screws and pulling a bit. I can not for the life of me figure out what went in first and how they got them in there. In any case we will have to build some kind of framing to hold the oven up now, if it even works. The fridge is upside down as you see in the photo and tomorrow we turn it over clean the back up a bit and try plugging it in again. I hope it works. If not I have no idea what we do next. Money is tight and we can't afford a new one. and I don't have any idea where we can get just the oven replacement if we end up needing that. We also found out we must fix the plastic part of the fridge vent on the wall, there are large cracks and broken parts on the sides. UGH- hopefully tomorrow is a better day.

I'm all for keeping things in the airstream as original as possible but when the fridge in the '63 safari quit,it had to go.eliminating it opened up the floor space and I just needed that extra breathing room.my use for the '63 is limited to short camping trips so a fridge is not really needed.all I need is a cooler with ice.ice is easy to come by without ever leaving a state or national park.an old fridge can be a pain.of course to some this is heresy .what makes it even worse is I beat it out with a sledge hammer when I could not cut the bolts off the frame.worked up a sweat,felt good actually.not to be dismayed because the goucho went too,along with the furnace that smelled like heck.the previous owner thought it was a good idea to store it for years with the window open.I'll be cutting out half of the floor as well.OK then ,carry on.Posted 01-11-2009 at 05:59 PM by richie rich

Taking a old frig out is a true pain.
HEAVY..
The new Dometic for mine was 1k or so at Camping World.
I can not believe how light the new frig's are when compared to the old ones.
Putting everything back together is the real fun....
But, it's worth it...
