I agree with the recommendation to stay at Prince William Forest Park. Lake Fairfax Park near Reston, VA has 136 sites, 54 with electric connections. Lake Fairfax also has a dump station and bath house. You can drive about 10 miles to the Vienna or Falls Church metro stations to get into DC.

Pohick Bay Regional Park, 22 miles south of DC, near I 95 in Virginia has full hookups as well as electric only and non-electric sites. It is 11 miles from the Springfield Metro station. It has beautiful natural areas.

The Metro is the most convenient way to see most of the major sites. Plan to drive to a station and ride to the attractions.

If you do metro and park at their station (Franconia-Springfield) you must purchase a SmarTrip card to pay for your parking - you can also pay for your train tickets with it, but only for one person, each additional person purchase single tickets for - it's not worth buying everyone their own SmarTrip card.

We stayed in the Capital KOA. Its was an ok park, but the nicest thing was the ride into DC every morning.

It has been a while, but as I remember, they left about 0830 and picked up about 1630. They dropped off and picked up on the mall. Just a couple of bucks, and didn't have to even look at my truck.

Haven't gone yet but there is a nps campground inside the beltway. It's called Greenbelt park or campground. The reviews all seem to be good plus, if you have the boondocking thing down, it's cheap.
