Hi the community;
I am bruno from France ( brunoffrance...) and the happy owner of an Overlander 27' from '71.
The blog -story was made to tell the uncommon story about our Airstream from USA to France, step by step in 2002.
After that I've tried to tell stories with this new toy and other american toys came in my life.
After the caravan , it was the pick-up truck to tow it, then an Harley-davidson, then travels in USA, my wedding in USA....
I try to post interesting subjects on what it's passion for my wife and I, with lot of pictures and comments ... from me.
hope you ll read it with great pleasure.

Water heater dismountle

Posted 09-07-2008 at 03:01 AM by brunoffrance

Always something to do in a vintage Airstream, and this year, a water leak appeared just behind the toilet and the wood floor began to became wet...
After checking the toilet faucet, tubes, I thought it was OK but no, the leak was on and water filling outside the Caravan by the curve....
The problem was situated on the water heater area... impossible to dismountle it during vacations so yesterday was the day....
what a work when all is "vintage", i mean rusted or riveted....
After a few hours , all is out of the trailer but where is the leak ?
i think that come from the aluminum tank, by porosity with hot water pressure but I'm not sure...
now, as all is on the grass, i think the best solution is to replace the water heater in totality, even if the burner system is not too old... but no risk in compatibility if new tank.
hope the leak come from there and not from another place ; i don't see where it could be other there...
The green on the copper tube, indicates me there was humidity but leak, I don't think so !
Before remounting, let's time to me to think and check other possibility but the trailer has to be wintering soon...
Buying another water heater is planned only for the next year ... i've seen on ebay best price so i need too, to know what is the replacement one , in gas only... No need to have electric ignition or more... that don't borrow me to switch on with a match when i need, occasionally, hot water.
here are the last news....

    Bruno,

I pulled the water heater out of my 1969 Overlander this evening. Patched the opening with a sheet of aluminum temporarily. Checking out camping world, there are suitable 6 or 10 gallon tanks from Attwood and Suburban for around $400 (usd). The heaters I looked at are smaller than the opening for the old one. I will have to figure something out.

    Best of luck.
    Jim
