Let the Renovation Begin

Posted 01-27-2017 at 03:10 PM by snkjones

My husband and I started renovating a 1973 airstream about 6 months ago. It has become a super fun way to spend time together. We have fixed the frame and put coosa board in for our subfloor. I have started polishing, but the cold weather has slowed that process. My husband is working on the wheel wells now. We are excited for the next step.

1963 Overlander Redo

I bought a well used 1963 Overlander last December, and worked on gutting it for the first five months of this year. But once Spring arrived here in northeast Wisconsin, camping, biking (and bikecamping), and outside activities took over.

Now that winter has come back, I'm also back in my shop and working on the trailer again.

I'm doing a shell-off rebuild. This week I hit a couple milestones. My gantries were finally finished, the old Armstrong air conditioner was...

Welding the A-frame on a Vintage Airstream

My next step was to address a problem with the frame of my Airstream. A couple of years ago when I'd first bought the trailer, I gave it a good cleaning and did a basic inventory of items that needed repair. One of the things I'd noticed was that the A-frame (consisting of the A-shaped steel members at the front of the trailer and the coupler that accepts the ball you tow with) had rusted out badly in one area. Knowing that at some point in the future I'll want to do a shell-off restoration...

Once you've generally figured out the budget to fix your vintage Airstream [find some suggestions on how to do that here], the next step is to figure out when all of the work is going to happen. How do you prioritize what's most important? How do you get all of the pieces of the puzzle to fall into place?

First, print out a copy of your budget; itís essentially a list of all the tasks that need to be done, and all of the materials you need to order. When youíve looked online,...

Creating a Budget for Your Vintage Airstream Renovation

Understanding the costs to renovate a vintage Airstream and figuring out the sequence of work can be very daunting. Initially, I didn't have those concerns at all - it's easy to get swept up in the excitement of picking up your trailer on eBay or Craigslist and figuring that with a little clean up, you'll be ready to start your adventures. I suppose that's true to some extent. But, having taken this approach myself, it was months after I'd bought my first trailer that I'd gotten an idea of...
