Making retirement hectic

Posted 04-08-2014 at 07:54 AM by traveluminum

Getting ready for an Alaska trip has added a little more work. I decided our 1973 Overlander needed solar panels installed on top, as well as an electrical overhaul. I ordered two more 100 watt solar panels, and was looking at the Airstream trying to figure out where to put them. I decided the antenna was just wasted space, since we've only used an antenna a few times in fourteen years. That was the easy part. While waiting for the solar panels to ship, I noticed the fresh water tank from the wrecked...

Cozied Up!

I just finished insulating the bottom 1/2 of the trailer. The ribs in the wall aren't uniformly spaced, and after pulling out the old insulation from the lower 1/2 and frame, I wasn't in a huge hurry to handle rolled insulation again. But isynene kits, the spray-on stuff, are about $1.33 a square foot, and only come in 200 sf (min) containers. So I went with the poor man's method and it really worked well.

I bought 4x8x3/4" sheets of R-Max foam panels and cut them to fit roughly...

Removing Lower-Level, Interior Skin Panels

Posted 02-25-2014 at 09:57 PM by JimCat2000
Updated 02-25-2014 at 10:04 PM by JimCat2000 (Add photos)

I spent the evening removing the interior, lower-level panels in order access the wall channel and separate the walls from the floor.

I've ordered a rivet removal tool (Vintage Trailer Supply), but it hasn't arrived yet and so far, it went pretty well using a drill bit (1/8" and 5/32" depending on the rivet) and a spring loaded center punch. The punch is available at Home Depot for about $14. The panels are attached with 1/8" pop rivets except for the panels that...

1959 Tradewind restoration wiring

'Whew, finally past the polishing. For the most part, that is. I still have to polish the propane tanks, and buff out some swirl marks that I couldn't see in the shop. But it is looking good!

This is the before and after shot!

121209 - Airstream Bike Rack Installation

Recently purchased two cruising bikes and wanted to take on our camping trips. After some research, purchased bike rack by Fiamma that is made specifically for our coach: Airstream Bike Rack.

I'm pretty handy working on the Airstream, but I never expected the job would require as much customizing as it did. Really poor job of engineering, or at least quality control, by Fiamma/Airstream. Once installed, it's just great, but inexcusable to not disclose amount of tailoring required...
