Couch/Bed and entertainment center progress

Posted 04-09-2010 at 08:11 PM by Bowmans

The couch/bed mechanics are done and face boards made and installed. below are pictures of the couch to bed process:

Couch:

Seat lifting and bed portion unfolding:

Bed portion father out and legs falling to open position:

Bed down:

The reason we went with this design is to have a slight decline of the seat when in couch form (with the bed layer tucked under the seat lifting the front slightly) and when the bed is laid out, both the seat and bed portion are flat.

Here is a photo of the bed unfolded and lifted straight up showing the legs dangling:

Front shot showing the legs underneath (the boards under the feet are there to simulate the flooring height):

We also will be using it as a couch 99% of the time since it is just the 2 of us sleeping in it so we made the couch longer so 4 people could sit comfortably watching a movie or out of the rain. It is 7 foot long. When the bed is folded out, it is 7 foot tall by 4 foot wide. After it was built, DW mentioned that fact that no sheets will fit it so I guess I will be sewing sheets as well .

We then made and mounted the face boards for the access under the couch as well as a runner board to hide the hinges. This board is on hinges so it opens with the bed. The center 3 openings underneath are for storage. The end 2 openings are for the speaker boxes.

Next we started building the end cabinet/entertainment center area. Below is the left side next to the couch that covers the converter box and left battery box.

Access panel for the converter:

The shelf next to the couch has a false floor to access the left battery box and more storage if needed:

The little corner panel also removes if needed. It had to be 2 pieces to pull out of the opening.

We continued on building the right side and then putting the cabinet top on. Many trips to the jigsaw and back to get the curves just right.

The entertainment portion will be on the right side. The top shelf will house the stereo (AC) and a DVD player with a framed glass door. The bottom will have a paneled door for storage.

The left side will just be a shelf without a door for storing remotes and stuff. I left the DC radio wiring if we decide to add one later. Eventually, we will build the table which will be hinged in the center just like the original except longer and slightly skinnier.

This thin cabinet will have doors and a hatch on top that will house a TV which will swing up in front of the window above it. The antenna booster box is mounted inside this cabinet as seen here.

Here is another shot of the whole living area. The curve on the back of the couch is on one side only due to the curved wall. The cushions will be square and sit right against the wall in that area.

It is back to the night job Sunday but it has been a great week off as far as the progress goes. We are still hoping to take our maiden voyage mid-summer.

Nice woodworking. I can see you know a thing or two about dove tails and mortices! Your phone will be ringing soon on major rehabbing projects.

    Thanks everyone.

    Cal,
I really enjoy woodworking and have a number of books that I read on tongue and groove, floating mortices, dovetails. I really enjoy a woodworking style that doesn't require metals. Unfortunately, weight issues require a mix of materials in this case.

What type of lumber where you using for this remodel!? I love the design! And have been looking for a way to make my '77 31' front more comfortable and entertainment friendly!
