Credenza Rebuild part 11

Posted 08-26-2010 at 10:26 AM by blickcd

Wednesday night was the moment of truth when I put the credenza base in the trailer and got the top reinstalled. The look and fit were great. However, there is still work to do.

I'll post some photos in a few days but I see I am running low on space for attachments. I may go back and resize some photos, and might even remove some from earlier posts.

Putting the credenza base back in required some thought. It gets set on the floor in roughly the right spot, then the top...

Credenza Rebuild part 10

I'll take a moment to answer a question I got regarding the tricky angle of the frame and how it was measured and put together.

Before taking the credenza apart I placed a large piece of cardboard over the top in the angled corner area, then traced the contour on the bottom side. Cut it out, and double checked the fit. This served as a template. In fact, if you look at part 7, you will see the template being used to catch overspray when I painted the inset panels.

Credenza Rebuild part 9

I spent a few hours Sunday building the electronics shelf for the center section of the credenza base.

Re-using some salvaged drawer glides from an old desk that was burned for firewood years ago, my plan is to have the shelf pull out like a keyboard tray, for easy access to wiring.

Since the whole shelf assembly will be attached to the underside of the credenza top it had to be built upside down. I had a good idea of the design but no plans other than a crude sketch,...

Credenza Rebuild part 8

To give you an idea of the time invested to this point, it has been a week of evenings, about 15 hours total. Now I have a Saturday to spend on it and post all these blog entries. Oh, but I slept in and have plans for later tonight, so I really didn't have all day. Here is the progress so far.

The walnut base was given a final sanding and its first coat of finish. I used a special blend, 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 paint thinner, and 1/3 gloss polyurethane. This should give a low shine that...

The laminated panels have dried overnight so it is time to make openings in them.

For the stereo panel, I already had the openings made in the plywood before the aluminum skin was glued on. With the panel face down on a piece of scrap, the corners for the stereo opening are drilled, then the edges are punched out with a wood chisel. Final trim was done with a file. I used the mounting sleeve for the new stereo as a guide.

For the 12 volt outlet, I drilled a number of...
