Old axle removed

Yesterday a couple friends and I removed the old axle. It's good to have friends ... and a torch ... and a breaker bar. The job took a couple of hours. A couple of the bolts were pretty stubborn, but the others weren't too bad. After the job was done we celebrated with steaks on the grill and a bottle of Stag's Leap cabernet. Turned out to be an evening to remember! Now I just need the new axle!

It all started with a broken window crank. We ordered a replacement from VTS. Then noticed that weather stripping was rock hard. Then noticed that the window was plexiglass sealed with silicone. Decided that if I'm taking the crank off, I should fix all this other stuff while I'm at it. Sound familiar?

I've ordered new weather stripping, butyl tape, and tempered glass. I could only get 1/8" glass. The dimensions were 16.5" x 37.5". The glass won't arrive for...

Almost finished fixing taillights

The taillights on our Bambi II were a real, rusty mess. I removed the entire assembly including the backing plate. I used JB Weld as a filler to patch the wholes in the backing plates caused by the rust. I painted the backing plates with POR-15. One of the old light sockets was completely caked with rust so I sawed it off and mounted a new light socket again using JB Weld. Now I just need to figure out what kind of glue to use to fill the small crack in the lens, make rubber gaskets from bicycle...

1964 Bambi II purchase

Posted 05-27-2012 at 01:54 PM by motrbungalow

My parents called me one evening and told me that a small Airstream was for sale just down the road from them. They asked if I wanted it. I said I was certainly interested and would call them back after talking it over with my wife. The next day my mother called and asked, "Well do you want this thing or not?!" I told her we did. I called the owner and told him I would take it. I agreed to pay his asking price and he agreed to tow it 1,000 miles north for me to pick up.
