thanks for mentioning the exposed exterior lpgas line issue twink and others...

take a look at these photos.

this is a new classic unit just about to leave j/c for the dealer...

notice the white (pex?) synthetic covering on the gas lines?

notice how the lines are 'finished' in the appliance compartment?

notice the potection begins near the bottles and extends UNDER the unit and INTO the appliance port hole?

anyone wanna guess WHY the lines are protected...

-by the factory...
-at assembly...
-before delivery...
-with this specific material...
-and on this unit?

My reasoning for having the extinguishers, is to be able to slow down the progress of the fire as I work my way out the door. Once we are outside, Let It Burn. There is nothing in your trailer worth dying for.

Is this done only on trailers bound for Canada ? My 2005 with the RVIA sticker dose not have this extra protection.

yes i think so.

i didn't see it on any of the euro models and certainly NONE of the domestic units.

i suspect it relates to canadian certification or code,

but it would be nice if the canadian dealer or ne1 who actually KNOWS why, could explain it.

i doubt the CRVA sticker has anything to do with it,

that was just my graphic way of 'splainin' this is a canadian (csa) unit...

and built with some different (BETTER) safety standards.

this didn't appear to be 'split' piping placed over the copper lines,

perhaps the copper comes pre insulated/wrapped ? and the ends are exposed at the junctions...

wire location and propane leaks

I had issues with the jack wire on my Safari as soon as I got it. Also had issues with the tank cover crushing the fuse holder and fuse for the jack and while I was investigating that I happened to follow the propane line aft and lo, there it was holding the right front stabilizer jack screw up. And doing a darn good job of it although it would'nt have lasted much longer. This on a one month old unit. After a few calls to JC found out mine wasn't the only one, they suggested reefing on the line to bend it outta the way. Nice. I loosened things up and relocated it and also spiral wrapped it. And mouseholed my tank cover.

The question remains, as 2air so eloquently put it....Why does the consumer have to make these modifications. Why not a recall and let the dealer, thru a factory recall, make these obviously necessary changes? JC should be paying thru the nose to make this things happen, not us!

the second door could be / is a "boyfriend door" or "girlfriend door" to be used in an emergency only...

the "special purpose" emergency door.

just thinking out loud...

FWIW, I visited the Airstream dealer again yesterday and did an extensive walk thru of a few FB models. At some point in the production, the emergency window in the 25 FB changed for 2008 with a delete of the small lower window and a full sized opening window put in it's place. I compared this with another 25 FB that had to older window, and very quickly saw how hard it would be to squeeze my butt thru the higher and smaller window, but the bigger window looked like no problem. Both pics below are from 2008 25FB models. Also, but but not pictured, a 27FB on the lot had the new bigger window. Unfortunately, I didn't note the manufactured date on each trailer to compare.

I have pictures of a 2007 27' FB International CCD that I took at a dealers before we ordered our 2008. Our 2008 has the larger emergency window where the 2007 doesn't, as you indicated.

i wonder if this is an actual model change or if some were ordered with or without the...

'stacked window' option...

i think that's how the small under/opener above combo is labeled.

certainly hope this IS a model change across the line.

which brings up another issue

on front bed/rear door models with non classic style windows (the hehr windows)...

what style and size is the front bedroom exit window?

After checking out Colonial Airstream current new inventory, I see that EVERY 2008 FB model (Classic, International, Safari) has the single larger window for the exit, but the stacked windows over the bed. A very quick look into the 2007 sold archives show the stacked windows on both sides.

No idea about the Safari models with the Hehr windows. I didn't see any.

Right there, it immediately shows me that I don't want to buy a pre 2008 model due to this safety defect. How much do you think this would cost to retrofit the bigger window into older units?

richL had one of the bigger/wider opening windows retro fitted into his unit last year...

he did it to replace a hehr window and get more ventilation, and covered this upgrade in his blog.

dt at the weatherford texas a/s dealer did the swap out, so you could likely get a price from him.

wild guess would be 800-1200 $ parts and labor.

My 2005 Safari SS has a pop out window, the type with 2 latches in the rear above the bed. All other windows open at the bottom.

as jim and jcanavera (in another thread 2-3 years ago) have posted on REAR BED units the window is just like the classic/ccds...

a full opening, single pane window with 2 RED latches and a pull out screen.

my question relates to front bed/ rear door models with hehr windows...

because putting an escape window over the lp tanks wouldn't seem wise...

so do they have one side window that is full opening near the forward bed?

this issue would be on the plain jane safaris that have a front bed/ rear door, and a side window escape plan...

perhaps they aren't producing any like this that don't have the window upgrades?

Now I'm confused (perhaps more confused). Hehr? What is that? Large window with the smaller oval one below? Some sort of strange laugh (haha) while clearing your throat (arrrgh, hack)?

I think the large escape window at the foot end of the 25' FB Safari SE was standard when I got my 2008 because I don't recall a charge for it.

We did make sure we could open it and sprayed silicone on the seals. We still haven't gotten the rear center panoramic open. I'm thinking of using a wide putty knife to loosen it, but it's not been urgent.

And, enough snow melted to look at the propane cover and how it rests on the wiring. Perhaps, and I need to look at it more closely, using a pipe clamp for 1/2" pipe over it would protect it without having to cut the propane cover. Not being a plumber, I am unsure if what I call a pipe clamp is truly called that, so to describe it, it's a piece of metal about 1/2 wide and a about 2" or less longer with a half round center and 2 screw holes on each side. This would provide a smooth barrier for the wire and distribute the weight better. I'm not sure there's somewhere to screw it too until there less snow.

I just went outside to measure our "emergency window" in our 2008 27'FB International CDD.
The height of the bottom of the window is 35 inches, the width is 28.5 and the height is 26 inches. The window is on the street side. The window on the curb size is 44 inches from floor to the bottom. 28.5" wide and 19 inches high. The distance from the bed to the wall is 17 inches.
