Fort Custer Recreation Area comprises 3,033 acres located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The terrain is typical of southern Michigan farm country, with second growth forests and remnant areas of prairie. Prairie restoration is in progress with excellent results. The area features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River and an excellent trail system. Originally farmland, the area was acquired by the federal government to establish Camp Custer, an induction and military training center for the US Army during WWII. The land was deeded to the State of Michigan under President Nixon's Legacy of Parks in 1971.

Pros: Very private campsites, clean, new facilities
Cons: park still being developed

Great for walkers, bikes, swimming, fishing. The campsites are large and have lots of brush around them so its very private. The pavement is new so bikes are great fun.Mountain bike trails too.Nice and clean facilities. When you enter the campground there are many downed trees, but inside the campground itself things are nice and tidy. The fishing lake is nice and dogs can take a dip.The swimming lake is lovely too (sorry pooches no swimming for you here). We really liked this campground, easy to get in and out of.Not the big lake dunes or scenery, but very nice campground, fewer crowds.Reservations are always a good idea in Michigan.
