Great park, lots of trails, waterfalls, rivers.Wonderful drive if anything. Its like being in a postcard. Its boondocking without hookups flush toilets are nearby and water is available. You get so much scenery and beauty. Early or later in the year you don't need airconditioning. If you really like the quiet, reserve the generator free area and get there early in the day you can find a great spot and you hear the white noise of the river--its very peaceful. If you fly fish its great get here in early May before the crowds. You are close to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg so if boondocking doesn't appeal there's lots of restaurants, aquariums, shows, etc. The commercial campgrounds appear awfully crowded in comparison but there are many nearby. Bring your/or rent bikes and ride the 11 mile Cades Cove loop which is closed to cars (mid May through Sept)on Wed and Sat mornings. I gave it a 10 because next to the river with all the quiet and the gorgeous scenery, plus the proximity of great restaurants like Corky's (m-mm-Memphis)bbq in Pigeon Forge (near the Krispy Kreme). All the campgrounds in this park are nice, but this is the best for being near a nice river in a scenic spot with privacy.Avoid G12 area noisy sewer pump.Still great in 07.

It all started here for me,Tent camping has the best memories...Once while leaving Elkmont in the Smokys, Saw a family of fellow tenters despertly looking for a spot, We let them have ours. (they had a cute girl)3 years later we ened up moving across the street from them!(Greeneville, Tenn to Birmingham) Took us a few days to figure out how and where we knew each other from. She was a knock out by then, and very stuck up.

Saw many bears thru the years here.

One early in the morning fishing.

Great camp ground for the kids, so much real camping to do.

Tried to edit all the crap out

My husband and I just got back from the Smokey Mountains where we stayed at Elkmont based on what we've heard from other Airstreamers. It's a beautiful area, quiet, woodsy, natural with a rushing river going through the campground. Lot's of people wading and tubing in the river. Most all sites are shady. There are several trails that begin in or near the campground.
The sites are not as private as I would like but you aren't right on top of your neighbor at most sites. There are some very beautiful sites especially around the river. No electricity at the sites or bathrooms.
We checked out another NP campground (Smokemount) while we were in the area. It's quieter but not as pretty as Elkmont. This is one of the prettiest campgrounds I've seen,
