Pros: Ferry is free, great, and they don't crowd your trailer
Cons: Campground dull/location awesome (oceanfront)

If you want to see the Island from a great natural perspective, this is the place to stay the campground is an 8 but the location is a 10 plus. Just over the dunes behind the campground is the ocean and you can walk for miles with the piping plovers running along nearby. You are essentially boondocking, but you are very near some lovely seafood restaurants and shops in the village of Ocracoke. You can rent bikes, kayaks, canoes, at the marina. In the village you can easily spend the whole day shopping and walking around. Blackbeard lived hereabouts, so the pirate store called Teach's hole is fun to visit. The little unpaved village lanes have seashells on top. Campsites are narrow, no trees out here to speak of but that's the landscape so it doesn't affect the rating--due to the winds you can't really have a campfire except in the grill really too windyfor awnings. But wow bring your kite! There are many full service campgrounds on Hatteras but its very congested and crowded. Be sure to get your gas and supplies in or before Nags Head as the prices go way up for everything the further out you get. Also there are no laundromats on the Island so plan accordingly. We were really nervous at first taking our 28' trailer on the ferry, the ferry crewmen were really nice and have lots of experience with rvs on the ferry they gave us two lanes. The ferries come and go very often so you aren't waiting a long time to get back and forth. The lower rating came from the fact that the bathrooms were in need of remodeling and the showers were just mist. Check the campground map before you go and get an idea of where you'd like to be since the reservations are not site specific.Try to get a site that backs up to the dunes then you can just walk over the dunes to the ocean.Ocracoke village is really quaint. Its worth a visit even if you decide to stay in a full service campground on Hatteras.Other commercial campgrounds on the Island appear unattractive and poorly kept up we toured both.If you go to the Island's coffeehouse/bakery be sure to get there early in the morning if you would like a bagel or donut.

Pros: Love Ocracoke! Close to the beach
Cons: Bugs....dependent upon season

We brought our tent and the kids and stayed here for two nights prior to checking into the Soundfront Inn on Ocracoke. Had a great time and everyone was super!
