Description: Located on the edge of and above the City of Yucca Valley, CA, this is an interesting campground and has some beautiful vistas, but it has the most convoluted layout of any National Park campground ever. The roads are mostly dirt as are the sites but there are deteriorated areas of old asphalt as well. To access the campground you drive through residential Yucca Valley and the campground sits on the edge of some houses. The last half mile of road is a nightmare of potholes and is not maintained. There is no road access into the park from the campground so you have to drive back down through Yucca Valley and up to the town of Joshua Tree to get to it. There is an extensive hiking trail system around the campground in the park and that is a good thing. We did a 5 mile loop on the Westside Trail and it was beautiful with nice views of Big Bear and Mt. San Jacinto.

The individual campsites are varied and we paid $15/night. There are some tight turns and steep sites, and there are some pull through sites that are a bit easier. The good thing is there are really no designated parking areas within a lot of the sites so you can place your rig where it will fit. We were in site #25 with our 29' trailer and it was a bit tricky backing it in but once there it was a great site, quiet and lots of room. Getting back out to the dump station was easy.

Generators are allowed but they are limited to 2 hours each in the morning, afternoon and evening. Water is available at stations throughout the campground and there are flush toilets and a dump station.

Make reservations at recreation.gov. They have ample photos of each site. You can also see site photos at campsitephotos.com

Pros: beautiful vistas and well spaced sites
Cons: road a little rough and many sites hard to level

Overall a very good experience, it was a bit strange driving though the suburbs to reach it - but it felt good once we were there. Many sites were quite sloped which made leveling a chore but not impossible. No services, so dry camping from what I remember.
