Description: This campground is a gem. It's located about halfway up--or down--CA Hwy 1, about 25 miles south of Big Sur. Don't try to get there unless you're confident in your TV, Airstream, and your driving ability. The road is narrow with some sharp turns and sometimes an almost 500' drop off to the ocean. Every site in the campground has a view of the ocean; there are no hookups, Internet, phone, radio or cable. Most sites are pretty level and very large but not all will accommodate Airstream+TV. There are flush toilets, but potable drinking water is problematic and there's no dump station. All that said, it's one of the most spectacular coastal campgrounds in California.

Pros: Spectacular views, solitude
Cons: Remote, fills up quickly

I wrote the original listing. I added this to include the rate. Since it's a USFS campground, seniors get in for $11/night with a valid pass. There's another very nice campground 5 mi south that has beach access but no views if Kirk Creek is full.

About 1/2 the sites are for walk ins, not reservable. Get there early in the day midweek and you'll probably get a site.

Pros: location, location, location
Cons: old restrooms, water was not potable when we visited

This is perhaps the most beautiful Forest Service campground I have ever stayed in. We were camped on the ocean side and had beautiful weather and beautiful views. We reserved our site using an annual access pass (not the senior pass) and paid half price.

Pros: Spectacular views, long and short hikes available, WOW! ocean views
Cons: Some sites are short and steep, access highway is subject to closure

We just got back from two nights at Kirk Creek. The wildflowers were out in full force (beginning of April) and the weather was sunny. There was quite a bit of wind the first day, but it died down and after that the weather was perfect. The campground is perched at the top of the cliff over the ocean. You can't get a better feel for the edge of the continent.

We had booked site 17 for one night (all that was available) and 18 for the second night. While 17 was a snug fit for our crew cab short bed F250 and our 25' trailer, 18 would have been impossible. Where 17 was nearly level, 18 would have left us nose down, if it weren't far too short anyway. The campsites on the outside of the ring are generally longer and more level than those that point towards the center. We moved to site 24 which was available for the nights we needed. It was a tight corner to get into, but we did fit, it was nearly level, and we didn't have to move during our stay.

We took the easy walk down to the beach a couple of times and also walked part way up the trail on the hill across the highway. Both were beautiful for different reasons.

There is massive road construction currently going on (April 2012) adjacent to Limekiln State Park, just up the road from Kirk Creek. Delays and closures were not always reported accurately and many people ended up waiting for hours when they had expected to drive right through. With some planning and flexibility, this is a wonderful spot to stay.
