Description: If you love Carolina beaches, but don't like high density development and the crowds they bring, I think you'll enjoy Hunting Island State Park campground.

The good stuff includes shady campsites, a wide beach and loggerhead turtle hatchery. Go out about 50 ft from shore and you'll step on round thingys. These are sand dollars and they are everywhere! Don't keep the live ones. Just pick them up, admire them and send them back home to their families. Within the park is the 150 year old Hunting Island lighthouse. Up until 2002 you could climb to the top. Hopefully, they'll reopen it one day. Oh, and there are shade trees growing along the beach. Sit in the shade while on the beach. What a novel idea!

The bad stuff is in the early part of the 1900s the site was developed with a boardwalk and sidewalks along the shore. Bad idea. The surf claimed them and you can still see this junk at low tide. There's some parts of the surf that you should avoid because of this.

Water and Electric only. Dump station on premise. The rates were around $20 a night as I recall. Go in August/September to see baby sea turtles walk to the sea from the hatchery just off the beach.

There's a couple of narrow bridges as you go down the two lane road toward the park so please drive carefully.

Pros: beach, campsites, playground, nature center, huge fishing pier, paved roads, quiet & deep in the woods
Cons:

Hunting Isalnd is a great campground. The bath houses, (there are many) are very clean. Most of the campsites are secluded and very nice. Easy walk to the beach. We were there this week for several days with the grandkids. A great place this time of the year. No crouds. You can rent cabins too. Get great fresh shrimp and seafood at Gay\'s just a couple miles down the road. See all the shrimp boats there. The camp staff is very friendly and helpful. A real treasure of a campground.

Pros:
Cons:

The lighthouse has been re-opened and it is well worth the $1-2 they ask as a donation, to be able to climb to the top and enjoy the view on a sunny day!

Pros: Absolutely gorgeous beach, decent bath houses, beautiful remote setting
Cons: Some campsites near the beach are tight and have no privacy

This was a great place to stay....we just happened to land there during Easter break so it was kind of a mad house. That was the only real drawback. I liked that it was so remote. It only takes about 20 minutes to drive into Beaufort if you need stuff. If you want the best private spots there see if you can get them to give you either site 95 or 158. 95 is in a woodsy setting but has a path to the beach through the trees right behind it. Be sure to explore the beach when the tide is going out, there are tons of shells and cool gnarly trees felled by beach erosion and storms.

Pros: Wow! Wow! Wow!
Cons: no sewer hook up

One of the best places we've taken the kids! Kayaking, the beach, fishing, biking...it was great!

Pros: Right on the beach
Cons: Bath houses are a little older and could use a reno.

We were there January 2010 and it was FREEZING! Literally - 21 degrees! But, the beach was beautiful, there were sand dollars and sharks teeth galore and the lighthouse was an easy walk.

Pros: Unspoiled natural beach, Mountain bike and walking trails
Cons: A lot of bugs when temps reach the seventies and above

My wife and I loved this campground. We were there in November 2010. One of the rangers told us it was the perfect time of year and I have to agree. We intend to return.

Pros: great beaches, not crowded (March), friendly staff, trails for bikes or walking, wildlife
Cons: gnatts and mosquitos when breeze stops, no sewer hookups at trailer (dump station only), no internet

We were there 2 days March 2011. Enjoyed bike trails, beaches, wildlife, historic program at visitor center. Beaches are wide at low tide. There has been storm erosion recently that left trees on the beaches. Light house is open. Great local seafood.
