Description:

DeSoto State Park in Northern Alabama (just across the GA line off I-85) has drive thru spaces and back-in spaces although the "Back In" spaces have the water/elec on the wrong (left) side so they're actually Drive In spaces. The pull thrus are too suburban for my tastes (few trees) and loud usually (TVs, etc) INCREDIBLY scenic. Lookout Mtn. Parkway is narrow and breathtaking. Mentone, AL has many cute shops and cafes. GReat area, nice people. I watched two whitetail dear feed as I drove away one morning.

Pros:
|
NIce wide sites, very wooded
|
Cons:
|
Tight backin approach between drainage ditches
|
|
DeSoto is a great area and well worth the stop. There is plenty of hiking and a nice amount of wooded space at each campsite. I would not recommend one of the drive through sites; not too much shade. None of the sites have views of the falls or valley so it is worth researching which site are the most secluded. I would recommend sites 21, 23, 25 on the northern loop

Pros:

Large sites, new bath houses.

Cons:

The campground was remodeled in '09 and is very nice. New bath houses and every site is full hook-up. It is about 15 min. from Mentone Al. and DeSoto Falls. Very scienic in the fall and spring. It is about 15 miles from I-59 on top of Lookout Mtn.

Definitly one of the best in Alabama. We have been and plan to go back. The bath houses are the cleanest we've been in. Theres tons to do. Great untapped park.

Camped in May 2012 with several other Airstreamers (mini rally). Well maintained campground. New, clean restrooms. Friendly staff. Beautiful quiet setting. A great place to relax a few days. Near Little River Canyon National Preserve, a must visit national park.
