Fisherman's Island State Park is not actually an island, but a 2,678-acre park with five miles of unspoiled Lake Michigan shoreline. 3 Mile hiking trail. The park encompasses a tiny island, Fisherman's Island, located a short distance offshore from the picnic area. Located just south of Charlevoix, it features a rustic campground with some of the sites nestled in the dunes along the lakeshore. The park road travels through the campground to the picnic area with access to the beach and miles of hiking trails. The interior terrain consists of rolling dunes covered with maple, birch and aspen broken up by bogs of cedar and black spruce.
Charlevoix offers many wonderful shops and restaurants.

Pros: great waterfront sites, nice trails, rangers available
Cons: near cement plant that runs during week some noise from airplanes, no playground

Large, private sites, lots of space and vegetation. We had a great waterfront site in the north campground, it was a pull through. Super views of the beach. Down side of the beach, by the water its very rocky and the water levels were low this year so the algae was all over. There were few clean areas to swim. This could vary year to year though. Nice groomed trails. If you mostly like to see pretty water views, without the swimming and boating, this is great. If you want to swim and boat, you've got the rocks and algae to contend with. We heard the water all day/night, lovely waves. Some background noise from the cement plant on Friday, not the rest of the weekend. Some airplanes as the airport of a small town is nearby and its in a path to Traverse City's airport, but not that bad. Its not the total wilderness experience, but then again you are minutes from Charlevoix which has a lovely down town with shops, restaurants, etc. Location is good to get to fuel, shopping, etc. I would buy fuel in another town though, we found fuel to be $.25 cheaper per gallon one town over (East Jordan). Well patrolled by rangers, clean but there are just vault toilets. Firewood can be purchased just outside the park. Many firepits for the waterfront sites are right on the beach (site 32, and 34).
