We have been camping at Compton Ridge since 1975 during our tenting days. Since that time not only have we raised a son who is now almost 34, but we have seen a family owned and operated campground pass into the hands of the next family generation and unfortunately due to the death in Iraq of the family member most likely to carry the family ownership, the campground was sold to Legacy RV Resorts. We heard less than stellar comments from folks who stayed after the ownership change over. New information reports say that Legacy has sold both campgrounds to a local Branson resident. He apparently is aware of the unhappiness and wants to return the campground to the friendly confines that the original owners provided. Compton Ridge is located west of Branson near the intersection of Missouri 76 and 276, and contains everything from sand base tent sites to deluxe red carpet sites which include cable and telephone hookups. The campsites sit under a heavy oak forest on a ridge within earshot of the moan of the steam train whistle at Silver Dollar City. The area is well outside the busy area of Branson yet is only a 15 minute drive to the beginning of the music show area.
For non campers the campgrounds includes a few airconditioned motel type rooms and now some camping cabins that have water, electric, and bathroom facilities. A nice touch so you and your non camping friends can travel together.
The campground is well equipped for rally's and has special events through out the season. Our favorite time of the year is late September through October when the oaks turn color, the temperatures are crisp, and the nightime oak campfires fill the campgrounds with their glow. It sometimes is an early morning when the squirrels rise early to drop acorns on the roof of your Airstream.
Note that there are two Compton Ridge Campgrounds on highway 276. The review above is of the main campground (South). The other is much smaller is called the North campground. Both have common ownership. We stayed in the North campground last fall (2007). It was our first stay there and personally I found that the campsites were marginal. Some of the sites now have permanent rental cabins. Back in's on some of those sites are tricky. There are paved sites but those are close to the highway and the resulting traffic noise.
My recommendation would be to try the South or Main campground over the North one.
Post your encounters with the new local management and how you think this campground is being maintained since its sale in late summer 2009.

Just an update to my review that was written almost 2 years ago. Compton Ridge is still one of the best campgrounds in the Branson Area. The owners continue to upgrade the campground facilities and improve the sites.

We heard that the corporate group that had bought the campground has sold it to a local individual over the late summer of 2009. Early reports were that the corporate group that were running the campground were less than stellar. Supposedly the new local owner is aware of that issue and will work to bring back the hospitality that the original owners so graciously displayed to all their guests.
