Description: Picacho Peak is a 3,370 foot pointy mountain formation that can be seen from miles away when driving on the I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix. There is a State Park at the foot of this mountain, and any month from October through early May it is a very pleasant place to camp (the remaining months being too unbearably hot!). Reach the Picacho Peak SP Entrance Station by driving about 60 miles Southeast of Phoenix on Interstate 10 (or 35 miles Northwest of Tucson). Take Exit 219 and drive along the road that leads to the Park entrance.

The Picacho Peak campground is open all year round, with the entrance gate to the Park accessible from 8 AM to 10 PM. The campsites are available on a first come, first served basis; individual sites have electric hookups, but no water or sewer. There is a potable water source in the Park for filling your freshwater tank on the way in, and a dump station for emptying on the way out. In March of 2005 the Park entry fee was $6 and the fee for a site with hookups was $15 per night. Call the Park for current fee information (520) 466-3183.

The sites are spaced widely apart from one another, and each has a grill and picnic table. Wood fires are prohibited. Restrooms and showers are available throughout the campground. Pets must be kept on a leash when outside of RVs.

If you enjoy hiking, there are several trails that go near, around, and to the top of Picacho Peak. BE SURE TO BRING WATER ALONG. You will be surrounded by saguaro cactus, and, in April or May, some beautiful wildflowers!

Although the freeway is close by, the noise is not very audible in the campground. Night skies at Picacho Peak are particularly dark and starry, with no nearby city light pollution.

In March there is an annual Civil War re-enactment at Picacho Peak. Re-enactors from all over the Southwestern area camp at the Park for this event. Spectators are welcome to tour the recreated military camps and watch the re-enactment of the Battle of Picacho Pass.

Another area attraction just down the highway is the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. If you are so inclined, you can buy corn kernels from the Ranch concession stand and feed the ostrich up close and personal. Ostrich-derived products may also be purchased!

Pros: quiet, clean, starry night skies, hiking, wildflowers
Cons: no individual water or sewer hookups

We have camped here several times and it has never been crowded. If you enjoy peace and quiet in the desert, it is a great place to stop between Tucson and Phoenix!

Pros: Great short-distance get-away for Southern AZ folks...
Cons:

We live in Tucson and frequent Picacho Peak State Park quite often in the fall, winter and spring months just to be able to "get out of Dodge" for a long weekend...it's too hot in the summer, however. We also stop there for a "last night to camp" on the way home from a longer trip, and head back to Tucson the next day after a good night's sleep. Early spring is wonderful for seeing the desert in bloom. Rates for elect sites are $20 in high season, $15 in summer...fires allowed in fire rings when not otherwise restricted.
