Ditto what "Honest Abe" :innocent: said. Wife and I have stayed there in the past and found the CG to be well kept with nice amenities and the friendliest AS owners anywhere.

San Elijo State Beach Campground If you like to surf and you want to be around other people who like to surf and camp…. this is the campground for you. The campground is located over one of the most popular surf breaks, Swamis, in southern California. There is even a surf school that is run out of an old Airstream on the campground. Unfortunately, no pix of the surf school Airstream, it was locked away behind a tall fence for the winter season. (I could only see the top of the trailer over the fence). There was definitely a fun vibe at San Elijo. It seemed that most people were camping there because they love some form of watersports (kayaking, surfing, fishing) and camping, so there was a very "active" and vibrant feel to the camping experience. We quickly found the shopping across PCH and to my delight… you can get some pretty tasty desserts at the market. During our stay, we were lucky enough to get a few days right on the edge of the bluff overlooking the ocean. In the early mornings we could watch dolphins swim past the surfers without leaving the warmth of the trailer. Roman could check the surf right from the Airstream’s dinette. This was the sole reason we bought the model (the25fb) that we did, so Roman could see the ocean and the waves from the lounge in the back of the trailer. Coffee, surf and dolphins, you really can’t beat that.

I have camped in this park many times and find it a good park. Some of the sites can be tricky getting into due to the trees, but if you can back up reasonable well you should have no problem. You can drive, bike or walk (15-20 mins) to the ocean to watch the sunrise if you are an early riser. Just a short drive to super mkts and some good restaurants and there are RV dealers close by for general parts.

Bahia Honda is undeniably a beautiful spot to camp. Nice beach, decent fishing, great birding.
Even in the Summer, the reliable sea breeze keeps things tolerable and as all the sites are two-way the air conditioning option is always available.
For the historically inclined, there is ample evidence on the island of the Florida East Coast Railways route from the mainland to Key West. Right of way, bridge decking and recycled track as railings.
The down side is that it is near impossible to get reservations in the park unless you camp out on the website at the earliest possible time. In the winter, there is a cadre of snowbirds that have mastered ReserveAmerica's nuances to the degree that the spend the entire season moving between the four State Parks in the Florida Keys. Makes it hard for anyone else who doesn't have the luxury of a year's lead time on their itinerary. Walk-ins are almost never accomodated although it has happened.
Very much worth the effort but be patient, plan well ahead and keep rechecking the Reserve America site. Both our trips were the result of last minute cancellations that popped up.

Myakka River is a lovely state park and a spot can usually be found on short notice. The campground is pretty well shaded but Summer can be a trial; hot, hot, hot and stand by for daily late afternoon thunderstorms.
The area is currently in drought but the park does flood easily so a tropical event can close it for weeks without inflicting any real damage. Be sure to call ahead if there has been any severe weather in the vicinity before your arrival.

Ortona (like most COE campgrounds) is well laid out and easy in/easy out. Fishing is excellent (esp. for Snook). Shade is at a premium so a stay in August will certainly test your a/c.
