Mazama CG, Crater Lake, OR
Mazama CG, Crater Lake, OR
Description 9/22-24/2014, Highs 72 to 45 degrees, Site D9. Bet we all wish this was the view from the campground! But no such luck. Short drive down US97 to OR138 and into the Park. Mazama Campground, run by a Park Service concessionaire who shall remain nameless here, is a mess. Not maintained, poorly run. Even with a reservation, it's a free for all after checking in where everyone goes out to find a site, which results in tents occupying sites for 40 foot motorhomes and RV's crammed into tent sites. At least when it started raining our site did not develop a lake like most other folks. The beauties of this park transcend the deficiencies of this campground, however. We got in a great hike up Mt Scott before the rain started and a very good meal up at the Lodge. A beauty even in the rain and fog. Had planned more nights here, but the heavy rain chased us out to drier places - such are the Oregon Cascades. Will be back again when the sun shines......

Description 7/6/2014, 95 degrees, Site 119. A hot, rewarding, two day trip to get here. Cleared out of Gillette early on 7/5 for Montana via a favorite drive past Devils Tower on US 14 to WY 24/WY 112 - the scenery never fails to impress. The paving of MT323 from Alzada to Ekalaka was finally completed in late 2010, so we completed a long awaited trip over the Southeast Montana prairie along the Little Missouri River/Box Elder Creek. If you want to be out there (waaay out there) this is one of those places. Had hoped to overnight in Ekalaka but....next time we will opt for boondocking in the Custer NF nearby. Quick tour also of Medicine Rocks SP - also a no go. Ditto for Baker, MT, although a clean, good looking city. So onward on US12 to Miles City and Big Sky Camp and RV Park (Site 19, 90 Degrees). Despite some not so good online reviews, the place turned out to be clean, well kept, roads/sites well graveled, and the folks hospitable - also cash only. Nice place to be after a long hot drive. Up not so early the next morning for the (relatively) short trip to Billings and the KOA. Not a bad venue, get a paved site, the pool is warm, the resort folks friendly, and lots to do in town. Dinner as usual at the Windmill - very good!

Description 7/7/2014, 90 degrees, Site 005. This State Park is so convenient as a stopover on I90 we had to do a return. Great shaded site, Lamb chops on the grill, a fine ending to this Tour. Next morning, another fine day for the leisurely trip home and......well never mind - would rather be Airstreaming!

Grand Canyon NP, Mather Campground
Grand Canyon NP, Mather Campground
Description 9/12-16/2013, High's in the low 70's, Site 124. Very nice site, but poor solar gain, had to use the generator. Otherwise, the South Rim is not called the busy part of the park for nothing. Pretty crowded even in Sept, but man, there is a lot to see and do. In addition to hiking the South Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trail, we did a good bit of the Rim Trail. Shuttle buses were great when not crowded, there was also Hopi dancing, artists exhibitions, mountain biking to Tusayan, great food and ..... a lot more sunshine!

Description We celebrated Thanksgiving on the beach here. Just hubby, B and myself. I cooked a 12 pound turkey in the oven and we enjoyed it on the beach. It was so nice and so simple! This was such a beautiful park and we had it all to ourselves. Wishing everyone a very happy holiday season - Monica
