Wine Country RV Park, Prosser, WA
|
Description |
9/18/2014, 80 degrees, Site 037. First stop on our (almost) two week Oregon Cascades Tour. Haven't been down this way in a while, and we needed to get some hikes in before the Grand Canyon trip in Oct. So with a great weather forecast and light crowds, we are off! First stop: Prosser and the Wine Country RV park. Your basic RV park but with wine tasting here and within a short walk to the wine village. Prosser is one of THE places to hang out and taste WA vintages. Took a different route down too, leaving home to Ritzville, to Othello and into the desert country north of Hanford, crossing the Columbia south of Mattawa to Sunnyside. Stunning desert/canyon country not frequented by those in a mad rush to get to the West Side. |

Fresh Fruit, Maryhill, WA
|
Description |
9/19/2014. September in WA and everything is ripe. Headed out from Prosser via WA22/US97 on the very scenic route over Satus Pass and down to the Columbia at Maryhill. Took a break at this Fresh Fruit stand opposite the Maryhill SP and stocked up on apples, pears, nectarines, veggies, and cherry jam for the trip. Back on US97 for the long pull to Bend, OR. |

Cinder Hill CG, Newberry Crater NVM, LaPine OR
|
Description |
9/19-21/2014, High's upper 70's to low 80's, Site 77. Have planned to visit here for decades but never made it: until now.... The usual long pull up from Biggs Jct and the heavy weekend Bend area traffic. Really unbelievable that this large campground, indeed all the campgrounds, right on the lake, were almost empty. It was the final weekend before closure for the winter; so this place must hop in the summer. Very good solar gain, quiet and relaxing. Headed out for the hikes up Paulina Peak, Cinder Hill Overlook, and the Lava Flow. Fantastic weather, but change on the way for Crater Lake. |

Mazama CG, Crater Lake, OR
|
Description |
9/22-24/2014, Highs 72 to 45 degrees, Site D9. Bet we all wish this was the view from the campground! But no such luck. Short drive down US97 to OR138 and into the Park. Mazama Campground, run by a Park Service concessionaire who shall remain nameless here, is a mess. Not maintained, poorly run. Even with a reservation, it's a free for all after checking in where everyone goes out to find a site, which results in tents occupying sites for 40 foot motorhomes and RV's crammed into tent sites. At least when it started raining our site did not develop a lake like most other folks. The beauties of this park transcend the deficiencies of this campground, however. We got in a great hike up Mt Scott before the rain started and a very good meal up at the Lodge. A beauty even in the rain and fog. Had planned more nights here, but the heavy rain chased us out to drier places - such are the Oregon Cascades. Will be back again when the sun shines...... |

9/25/2014, 55 degrees, Site 119. Headed out of the rain down OR62 to OR422 outside Klamath Agency. Short break to check the cell-phones and on to US97 to this beauty of a park outside of LaPine. Camped right next to the Deschutes River; the park only half full. Next morning, a leisurely hike around the park perimeter finished off a very relaxing stay. |

Link Creek USFS CG, Suttle Lake, OR
|
Description |
9/26-27/2014, 62 degrees, Site 010. A short trip up US97 to Bend and then west on US20 to Suttle Lake. Lots of good times tent camping and fishing this lake in the late '70's, good to return after so long, especially in an Airstream. We're on the opposite (west) end of the lake from the Suttle Lake Resort. Arrived to find that my site reservation skills on Recreation.Gov were terrible: no way would we fit. Looked around and then talked to the Camp Host who kindly pointed us to this primo site right on the lake. Poor solar gain, but who cares? The generator worked great. A few folks dropped by to check out the A/S, and got to talk with them about owning one and the 4CU - always a pleasure. |

9/27/2014, 64 degrees. Looking uphill from the lake shore. Another great hike today up Black Butte; we were rewarded with views all the way from the Three Sisters in the South to Mt Adams in the North on this perfect fall day. Headed back to Suttle Lake for dinner; afterwards noticed that a tire was flat on the truck (picked up a bolt). So for dessert it was get the spare on before it got dark - slept well that night! |
