I haven't had any troubles with the flat blade...

I haven't had any troubles with the flat blade connectors and I have them on several units. Even to connect the solar panel to my trailer.

Disconnect the house battery common/ground...

Disconnect the house battery common/ground terminal before removing the trailer end plug. Especially if it is made of metal.
