Drivers License Cost
I haven't noticed much discussion of this topic but I just renewed mine and was a bit taken back by the cost. Maybe I'm just getting old and not keeping up with things but here it is.

First I walked into an empty office Wednesday afternoon at about 2 PM. I walked right up to the counter to a waiting clerk. It's nice living in a small town.:D Anyway she verified my address and other details and then administered the eye test, color vision test and a couple other vision tests and happily I passed. Then she presented me with the bill, $155.00. I was more than a little surprised. Last time I renewed it was more like $55.00. Next it was down to the end of the counter for my picture, she said I was allowed to smile if I wanted to. She presented me with a paper temporary and said the plastic laminated permanent license would come in the mail in about a week. Out the door I walked in about 5 minutes.

The fees were normal license..$45.00, commercial class A..$85.00, and motorcycle..$25.00.

Like I said I may be out of touch and I know the States are hurting for bucks but I was wondering if this is common across the country? I suppose it was a small price to pay compared to the 3 hour lines I endured at the Southern Calif. DMV.

Cheers, Dan

:) Hi, I just did a quick check on the California sight. I have a class "C" and a "M1" and it lists them separately at $31.00 each. I don't think that I have ever paid them separately. [or $62.00] I think, but not sure, that I paid about $20.00 to renew last time. I have one more year left on my current license.

I believe they're quoted separately for people who just get one or the other.. There are people with M1 but can't drive car.. I am on extended renewal for both, but expect CA will require more formal renewals to raise money next year.. We'll see..

It was $95 last year to transfer and renew my class B from Florida to North Carolina. Others may want to make sure before they go in to renew whether their state now accept credit/debit cards. North Carolina is cash or check only. The examiner was nice enough to hold my stuff while I drove home and got my checkbook. I think we will see more of this as credit card companies raise their fees, and states' budgets get tighter.

I would have thought that if you have a commercial class A license, you don't need a normal license as well. In Louisiana, I used to have a commercial license, and it replaced my normal license. I didn't need both.

Only reason I didn't keep the commercial license, at the time I wasn't using it for my new job, and it wasn't worth the extra money to renew it.

Here in GA the regular license fee is $20.00 for 5 yrs or $32.00 for 8 yrs. Credit cards are accepted. Ga is compliant with the new "Real ID" law and requires proof of citienship.

Louisiana is not yet compliant with the Real ID law. At the rate we're going, we'll soon need a passport to cross the state line. Like the bumper sticker says, "Louisiana. Third World and Proud of It!"

One of the joys of living in Washington is no income tax. Of course I pay 9.5% Sales Tax (a regressive tax). My $30 car tabs just cost me $185. and my Drivers License renewal fees have gone up. One way or another the government gets their money.

Yeah I find it interesting that with a commercial class A I can drive pretty much anything size wise but I get charged another $45 to drive a car.

Another frustrating thing when I moved to Washington they accepted my commercial with no questions except for the 20 question haz mat endorsement. But they would not accept my motorcycle endorsement. I not only had to take the written test but also a drive test which just happened to cost another $85. I understand they have since changed that rule.

I guess the only redeeming thing is the no wait, 5 min. in and out transaction. No forms to fill out, just hand the clerk my old license and sign the electronic reader. Also they do take credit cards but not VISA, the agreement expired and has not been renewed yet. They do accept a VISA debit card.

The license is good for 5 years.

Cheers, Dan
