need air conditioner

HI,
I don't currently have an air conditioner. I am wondering where the best place to install on my '66. And what type to get?

Unlike more recent RVs, air conditioners do not install into an existing roof vent opening on our Vintage Airstreams. A hole must be cut a set measurement from the number one (front bow) - - the hole is centered fro side-to-side on the roof and the opening is braced with rot resistant wood or aluminum extrusions. Once the opening is cut, you will find the power cable coiled up very close to the hole, and may also find the end to the condesate drain as well (I am not certain if the condesate drain was standard or not in 1966). Bill Thomas RV is probably your closest Airstream dealer, and his service department should be able to advise you on the proper placement of the air conditioner on your coach.

Good luck with your coach!

Kevin

Another important point is that you want to get an AC unit that's intended for an Airstream-type installation, so it'll have the right pan to deal with the condensate drain and the shape of the roof. That's hearsay gathered from obsessive reading of the Forums, though, I haven't had to swap one out yet.
