Rear disc brakes
I understand that the later P-30 chassis had rear disc brakes. This has to be a major improvement over the rear drum arrangement on my '74.

Has anyone tried or thought about retrofitting these later disc brakes to an earlier chassis? I figure the only way would be to find a complete rear axle and swap it in, then probably change the master cylinder, too. Anyone have any real-world experience and/or advice?

You would also have to change the proportioning valve. I thought about it but decided the cost (and labor) to do it wouldn't be worth the improvement in braking. The rear axles aren't cheap. If you wanted to change gear ratios at the same time that would offset the cost.

Okay, I admit it - I'm a glutton for punishment. Does anyone know what year models of P-30 chassis I'd need as a donor to do this swap? I assume the same year models of P-30 bread truck would work, too.

One additional question: did the front brakes stay the same when GM made the swap to rear discs?

1979 for sure, and I think it was the first year. Sometimes there were contracts that crossed model years and you could find some spec'd with drums for later years or heavier GVWs.

Fronts should be the same after the changeover.

would the later brakes even fit or adapt to the 74? Mine has 19.5" wheels, and I know the older ones had smaller 16 or 17, does that indicate a different size hub and all or am I nuts.(it wouldn't be the first time)

disc brakes
Being as the front brakes do all the work I would think it would not be worth the effort. probably a different master cylinder as well. Could be a real nightmare.
