high pitch whining noise..

I have a 1996 chevy tahoe, 5.7 liter. When traveling in warm to hot weather, there is a high pitch whinning noise under the car, happens even if not towing. Anyone had this problem and if so how did you solve it. Thanks

Sounds like you need to call Click and Clack.

Alternator?
Transmission?
Could be lots of things.
If you have a mechanics stethescope or just a wood dowel, you can probably isolate it to an area or item.
Good luck.

Is it there regardless of speed?

I'll suggest fuel pump...

I'll second the fuel pump suggestion. Especially if it has ever been replaced, they tend to hum, buzz, and howl whenever the engine is running, whether the car is moving or not.

Does it happen all the time. Or is the annoying noise only when the other half is also in the truck....

Fuel pump. noise is good. no noise, oh oh, no start and ka ching ka $chingaling. Keep your fuel tank over a quarter full to keep coolant on the intank fuel pump.

I had the same problem on my 95 burb. see if it is louder when the tank is low.

My last GMC started whining when it reached 90k miles or so...

I have a Tahoe 2002, the rear diff gets low of the 90 weight oil and the the gears will have a whine. I had a leak after a repair and found that the gear housing was low. quieted down when I added some.

can you tell how you solved your problem?? And no to your question to me.

jayray5 03-21-2008 07:11 PM

solved it

My problem was a bad fuel pump--I replaced the whole tank, start up your truck and put a long extension (metal or even a broom handle) up against the tank. If you feel the vibration that is it. Put it to your ear and you will hear the whine.

My father had a vac. leak at the tranny that had the same noise. Sounds alomost like you got a turbo at low speed...?

Whiney sound

Mine is caused by the power steering pump (1990 GMC van).
It sounds like a turbo charger all the time the engine is running also.
