345 generator replacement

Has anyone put a new Onan in their Classic? Once again, the money pit beckons. Since we've upgraded to 50A and installed all new HVAC, appliances, inverter, solar, etc, I'd like to upgrade the generator as well. The issue is the new units - Onan RV QG 7000 EFI Generator are wider - 33.6 inches x 22.2 inches x 16.7-inches high. The 345 compartment is roughly 29 x 24 x 19. I'm no math whiz, but...hmm, sounds like a can opener is called for. Any help or experience is greatly appreciated.

Hey,
Onan gensets are loud and heavy. Look into one of those portable sets they sell now. I got a Honda genset. It's loud too. I think it's a 1080 . It's water cooled and work great, but it is louder than I'd like it to be. I have seen some guys at worksites running a lot of things on there gensets, and I'm impressed at how quiet they run. So the technology has definetly come a long way from the 80s. I think the only reason why they had onans, is because onan was the one everybody had. Lots of options today. DJ

Thanks DJ - good advice, I'll check the Hondas out and see if they have a fit for the old girl.

We had ours replaced with an rv qg 5500 or something like that. i donít remember the actual numbers off hand but they had to mangle the opening pretty good to get it in the hole. They got it in but I am doubting without a sawzall it will ever come back out. It isnít too noisy. We can sleep with it going and no one has complained so far... ours is an 87 345

I have put in a fuel injected 7.0 Cummings Onan. Fits good in the huge space the old Onan 6.5 use to live. Working great and is quiet. Runs both of my air units and microwave with power to spare. Tried a 6.5 generjunk and will have nothing less than the Onan. They have serviced the RV industry for many decades! The new ones are much lighter and quieter. Just my 2 cent's worth [emoji848]

And yes we have changed to a 50 amp feed as well.

Appreciate the info. That's the model I'd like to put in ours as well. I'm curious about the size and fit. From the specs of the current models, that unit appears to wide to fit. Do you know if they made any modifications to get it installed?

I did it myself. Had to raise it about 3" an still had about 2" gap to top of compartment. Good room sideways as well. I'll look to see if I have some photos.

Thanks Chris - if you can let me know the year and model# too that would be great.

It doesn't show on the phone app, we have a 1982/83 310. Generator is on the right side, rear of the coach.
