Vicksburg and Atlanta Campground suggestions

Looks like we will be adding Atlanta to our annual road trips to visit kids. Vicksburg appears to be about halfway. Any COE or state parks on that area? Also ant recommendations on the western edge of Atlanta?

Thanks
Dana

Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain state park is a GREAT park. Itís just off 285 on the West side of ATLANTA. We stay here three or four times a year.
As far as VICKSBURG? Thatís a tough city. There is not much there that is worth staying in. Weíve stayed at Magnolia camp ground which has 4 stars on AllStays but its really not that great.

It's not Vicksburg, but Natchez isn't that far away. About three weeks ago we spent the night at the Natchez Visitor Center. They have many 15 amp outlets and one 30 amp one. They also have a dump station and a restroom open during the day. Great place to stay for $00.00. Some nice restaurants within walking distance. You'll be staying in a sloped parking lot, so bring your leveling blocks. Hint: the 30 amp outlet is at the bottom of the lot.

No Georgia State Parks in Atlanta, but many in the state not too far away . Check the Ga. State Parks website for info. Also consider the US Army Corps of Engineers campsites around Lake Lanier NE of Atlanta....

Atlanta

North of Atlanta is a great Airstream park just outside of Helen Georgia.
It is Top of Georgia Airstream Park. It is in the mountains so it's cooler than Atlanta and the setting is like a State Park.
It is on Georgia Hwy 75 just 6 miles north of Helen.
This is a great park so come on up.

I would recommend Grand Gulf Military Monument park in Port Gibson. Just south of Vicksburg. Excellent place

When we visited Vicksburg, we stayed at Ameristar, a casino RV campground. Found it to be very adequate and would stay there again.

For Natchez, Riverview RV park, across the river from Natchez is a great RV park on the river.

Try RedTop Mtn State Park about 25 miles North of Atlanta.

Stone Mountain is on the east side of Atlanta.

Best bets if you want to be in north part of Atlanta is either McKinney Campground (Corps of Engineer) or Red Top Mountain SP. Very close to each other. Both less expensive than Stone Mountain, which is east of Atlanta. Make reservation ASAP. These are popular.
Vicksburg - Stayed at Casino parking lot a year ago. Not impressed. Only positive was the free shuttle to the casino. Went there & watched college football on large screen!

Hi

The Ameristar Casino (already mentioned) is an easy shot off the interstate in Vicksburg. We spent several days there. For an "in town" pull over, it's reasonably quiet. Being in town, it's a reasonable distance to the sort of things you might what to do when there. They have a shuttle to the casino, we didn't use it, but it seems to be popular.

Helen is ... errr ... a bit far off the beaten track if you are just passing through. That said, you really can't beat Top of Georgia. Great people, nice sites. Better price than the COE (since COE doesn't have cable TV and WiFI ....). Full hookups. It's been raining there for the last few days, as of this morning it hadn't washed away :)

Iíve stayed at Ameristar in Vicksburg and like others found it adequate. The location is good.
I like Lake Alatoona (COE) on west side of Atlanta and Stone Mountain on east. There are some great state parks in north Georgia if your continuing that way.
Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham and Cheaha State Park near Anniston are some good options if you decide to add another stop between Vicksburg and Atlanta.

Carters Lake has 2 campgrounds near Ellijay in the foothills of the mountains, Woodring Branch and Doll Mountain. Worth going out of the way a little. They have electric and water with a dump station. They are right on Carters Lake and just beautiful!

You are absolutely correct. I meant my other left. Duh.

I agree with Dugster McKinney Campground (Corps of Engineer so half price if you have the interagency senior pass) or Red Top Mountain SP.

Not familiar with Atlanta campgrounds but River Town Campground in Vicksburg is very nice. We've stayed there several times.

Red top mountain state park. Near I-75 Cartersville. NW of Atlanta

We also stayed here a few weeks ago. Very difficult to get level in most sites but weíd choose this one again. We had 2 1/2 hrs of tornado warnings and people gathered in the office area. They even allowed us to beings letís in.

About 60 miles west of Altanta in the Great State of Alabama, you might check out Coleman Park near I-20 & the state line. Very quiet, wooded with nice lake & minimal use as I remember.

For a good county camp ground, check out Little Tallapoosa Park off GA Hwy 113 about 8 mile south of I-20 & about 45 miles west of Atlanta. Its near Carrollton, a great little city.
