What it's this and is it useful?

It's a 1" ball mounted on the side of the frame. I'm guessing it was added by the previous owners and used as anti sway at some point? I'm restoring the front and plan on removing it unless it has some value that I'm unaware of...Attachment 338641

Auto correct is my grammar nemesis.

"What IS this and is it useful?"

Yes. Old friction sway control. If not using one remove it. I removed mine and just put a dab of sealer on the screws and put them back in the holes and painted over.

I had one and changed hitches. I just guessed that 6 holes drilled that close together could cause weakness. Get it? guessed. So I took plate steel the same dimensions of the sway control and bolted it in place and painted it. It looks fine and it remains strong.
