Can an Airstream have a roof porch?

I was wondering if an airstream could have a small porch on top or even a collapsable canvas room to sleep in on the top of an airstream. I figure a bit of reinforcement would be due but i cant see why it couldnt.

I think it is possible with the right reinforcement for example my satellite dish

Not a lot of places on the roof to sleep with vents, A/C, TV antenna, vent stacks, etc on the roof. The only strength is in the aluminum ribs and they are not designed to support much weight. The roof is curved as well, so you would have to build a structure and you are going to create a nightmare, and potentially cause severe damage to the trailer. If you really want to do this I suggest that you buy an SOB and damage it instead!! JMHO

I agree with CBWELL; too much stuff on the AS roof. BUT - you can do it on your tow vehicle! Lots of these available. Yakima makes one as well.

When you look out the window of an airplane, there are no step signs all over the wing.
Those should also be on top of airstreams. The structure is not built for supporting the weight of a person. At least between the ribs where there is no support under the skin.

You could possible build an external frame to become a deck for your porch/tent.
But the would add weight up there where its not a good thing. Plus mess up the airflow along the roof while towing.

There is one model of airstream motorhome called a Skydeck that would fit your needs by design.

Cheers Richard

Questionable roof reinforcing

Look in classifieds under airstream motorhomes. There is a Skydeck listed there.
