Mixing endurance and marathon
 
Had a blowout today using 2016 marathon 225 75 15

Hit some debris on i81 just north of Roanoke. Virginia road ranger via Virginia HP WAS MAGIC. THANK YOU GUYS.

Anyways am homeward bound to Florida. So my plan is to replace the blown tire with endurance and use it as a spare for the remainder of the trip running with four marathon and then replace the other marathons when back home.

Is there any major down side to this plan?

Many on the forum would seriously consider changing out ALL the GYMs instantly. Drive carefully

You’re fine. Definitely inspect the others.... if they look good head on home.

Good plan to replace all with endurance tires - much better tire.

What are the dates of manufacture on your tires, including the blown tire?

Any tire older than 5 years is suspect IMO, especially GYM's.

You have a ‘16 FC, so the tires are likely 3-4 years old.
I would inspect for damage, and finding none, run them home and look for a good deal at that point.
I would not hesitate to run an Endurance with 3 Marathons. The tires simply support weight and spin, it’s not like there’s a differential that might get smoked due to mismatched tires.
Check pressure and keep your speed below 65 per the tire rating. You’ll be fine.

I find it interesting that the OP states he hit some debris and many folks are ignoring that information in their recommendations.

People, tires are not immune to road hazards. You can argue that a Marathon has some issues, but this wasn't the result of that.

There are plenty of posts about older tires being in the mix, for whatever reason.

Why not take 5 minutes to check? An utterly simple owner awareness task . . . :wally:

I would not hesitate continuing back home with the Marathons. I hope u have tire monitors.
I would definitely check the remaining tires to insure they were not damaged.

I'm still wondering why ST tires pick up nails and hit potholes that cause it to fail far far more often than LT tires. :huh:

They usually blow out because of tire failure - this does not seem to be your issue, to take it home but replace the GYM asap, this spring we had a GYM failure on out 2014 FC and by the time we got home on our spare a second tire was separating - you are on the verge of problems with the GYM.s BTW we did get four new marathons - also our FC was in the body shop for a month forcing us to miss prime spring travel.

Forget the brand. We had specific "trailer"tires that our tire person for 25 years deemed suitable. That blowout in a 25 foot cost over $3,000. In a 28 foot we had the same situation that cost us us $1,600. Not worth it. Put new tires on - new "trailer" tires. There is a difference. Good luck - as I am pretty sure you took the advice to drive through to home with what you had.

I found a good shop only a small detour away and after consideration and talking to the other happy airstream campers where I’m parked up, I’m going for the full replacement program since the shop can get stock and fitted midday Tuesday

People here also mentioned metal valves and inflation at a much higher pressure than the marathons

The answer to your question is no! Run ‘em ‘til they’re worn out or too old!

Yup. Lost a one-year-old Goodyear marathon today to a road hazard. Stuff happens…

This tire is rated to 80 psi. E ratind

The marathons are 65 psi are D rated

I have alloy wheels. - can they take the higher inflation pressure of the endurance and is that wise given the sticker on the trailer stating 65 psi - I presume because the marathons came as standard and they max out at 65

80 PSI is the maximum which is only needed if you have a load of 2,380 lbs per tire (ST225/75R15)! Why not weight your trailer axles, then check the load/inflation tables and inflate to an appropriate pressure that won't contribute to damage to your trailer because of too stiff a ride and still carry the load?
