Yamaha v Honda generators Costco $499.00

Just saw this SC2000i at Costco for $499.00. Is Honda worth the extra 500? Twice the price ?!Attachment 290816

Essentially the same specs as a Yamaha EF2000i unit (uses the Yamaha MZ80 engine w/ different control board) and quite the bargain comparatively. Warranty backing by iPower is an unknown though Costco is great if you are dissatisfied post purchase.

So, Yamaha engine powering an alternative brand generator. Not exactly a Yamaha generator, but may be good value. Buy one and give us a report. Pat

Just to confirm, you know that is not an actual Yamaha Generator, right? A genuine Yamaha sc2000 is $900-$1,000, as is the real-deal Honda 2000w model. This is a Yamaha engine only.

Also there is a major difference in at least one spec, 65 decibels is way louder than mid 50s on one of the genuine models.

I'd vote no but that's just me. I'm not a fan of knock-off junk. In this case knocking off not just the Yamaha (can't believe Yamaha sells them the engines given that they basically copied the genuine item almost exactly), but even giving it an Apple-sounding name. Reeks of desperation.

Plenty will disagree with me, but hey, it's airforums.

Is Honda worth twice the price? YES!
Seriously, it's like $400-$500 more and you have something that will outlive you in all probability.

That's a depressing thought 😱
Seriously, the Wen generators are supposedly powered by Yamaha as well.
We have a pair with the parallel kit. They run our AC no problem, run quiet, and start easily. My hope is they live a long life and I'll be glad to outlive them and pocket the $1K difference in price!

Ok. Thought too good to be true !! I missed that wasn't a real Yamaha ! I'd be tempted to try and see how loud. If no good Costco takes back anything

pmclemore 07-29-2017 08:08 PM

But is it a quiet unit?

A difference of 6 db. is four times the sound energy.

Is the Honda worth twice as much? When you go to sell it, yes.

Wen 2000w inverter gen, 51dB @ 1/4 power load. $475 @ Wal mart. Rated at 4.5/5 stars by consumers.

I know; no two mfgs rate sound emission the same: power level, direction, distance. But, I have these units and they don't seem loud to me. FWIW

What's more important than the motor, is the design and reliability of all the electronics in a generator. :brows:

Well I guess it remains to be seen. If I don't spend $1000.00 fixing these gens over the next XX years then I think I come out ahead.

Wow, I think the Costco knock-off has "Yamaha" printed in it more than my genuine Yamaha EF3000iSEB! If this is like the Smarter Tools unit that was also powered by a 79-cc engine of Yamaha design, Yamaha licensed the design to other manufacturers but doesn't manufacture the engine directly. I do not know that to be the case here, but I'd guess that Yamaha didn't have a whole lot to do with this generator because they wouldn't want a 3rd-party company plastering "Yamaha" all over a blue generator that costs half what theirs does.

I'm a little sorry I missed out on getting Costco returnability, I bought a pair of Briggs and Stratton generators earlier this summer for a few dollars more than these, but I'll just console myself with the fact that the P2200s are rated for 2200w peak/1700 continuous with a slightly larger (110cc) engine so maybe they'll perform better in the long run. Time will tell! (both running time and calendar time...)
