Canopener 2018

12th Annual Canopener Rally

January 4-7, 2018

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Gregory E. Moore RV Resort

7525 W. Scenic Highway 30A

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida 32459

(850)267-8330

This years Canopener will have activities to be determined later in the year but the Clubhouse has been reserved for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I expect there will be music, chili, cornhole tournament, bunko, open house and more music. Who knows what else will be added.

Reservations for campsites must be made through Reserve America. Their policy prohibits reservation more than 11 months in advance of your arrival date (see their site for exact details).
After you make your reservation, RSVP Here with names and site number http://www.airforums.com/forums/cale...y=2018-1-4&c=1

Ready to sign up. Will there be a group there for New Years again this year?

Al

Noggin 01-28-2017 06:46 AM

I have heard that several folks have already booked sites so they will be there for New Years. Right now, I don't think we can get there before Jan 3.

3dawgnight 01-28-2017 08:53 AM

We are planning on signing up tomorrow so we can be there New Years Eve.

Our tentative plan is to leave Melbourne on the 29th, spend the night at Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs and drive to Topsail on the 30th. If that fits with your plans, maybe we can caravan.

Al

3dawgnight 01-28-2017 09:01 AM

We would love to but we will probably be coming from Tennessee visiting family for Christmas. If our plans change I will let you know. But we will be at Topsail for New Years.

Chief Simba 01-28-2017 02:29 PM

We are in.

Boogieshoes 01-28-2017 03:28 PM

We are definitely in; arriving Dec 27th and leaving Jan 8th. Site 140. Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Sites Going Fast

A check of the Reserve America website this afternoon indicates sites are going fast. Much of the 103 Loop is booked from before New Year's through the rally dates the following weekend. I wasn't able to get the site I've had the last 6 years. Here's a link to Reserve America if you want to make a reservation:

A map update appears below. Clearly not all of the reservations have been posted on the rally RSVP page. Below is a map showing the RSVP status as of 1:50 pm today. If you have a reservation please use the RSVP link below to register with the rally so I can get you on the map.

djarrett 01-29-2017 02:02 PM

Perhaps I'm missing something, but it appears the only way to book right now is to book a date prior to the 29th of December and then extend it into 2018, as to try to book the actual dates of the event results in a message that it is outside the current booking window. Is this how folks are working around the limited booking dates?

D

3dawgnight 01-29-2017 02:40 PM

We were there last year before New Years. We did a New Years Eve progressive dinner which was a blast. There were about 40 other rigs there. It's probably catching on. There was also a big group of SOBs there so there could also be bunch of them as well.

Yes, that is how it works. Your starting reservation date cannot be more than 11 months in advance.

Exactly Rick. The New Years Eve party not with the Canopener has a lot of sites booked that weekend but will bail out and be gone Jan 1 or 2. Then most sites will open up for Canopenians. Be patient but ready to book Feb 1 or 2.
Good luck everybody. We are in the same boat.
Joe & Annette

AWCHIEF 01-29-2017 03:55 PM

Fear not folks there will be plenty of spots available. Airstreamers and SOBs will be cancelling right up to the start of the rally. Walking around during the last rally I spied at least a dozen empty spots that were never occupied.

Captain Hank 01-29-2017 04:07 PM

We are in site 116.

We have slightly revised our plan. It will probably change between now and then but the current plan is to leave Melbourne 12/28 for Sumter Oaks. I will make a weighing reservation for 12/29. After that is done we will head for Stephen Foster in White Springs and drive to Topsail on 12/30.

We are booked for Site 123 from 12/30 through 1/7. Plans after that are not firm but may include St. Josephs Peninsula, Oleno State Park, and Hillsboro River State Park.

Al

Hi folks!
Judy and I will once again be on site 53. We missed Canopener this year but will try again for 2018! Canopener is always the first reservation for the winter planning. Not sure where we will be going but we want to be at Topsail for News Years Eve. See you all there:)!
Pete

LOGUE88 01-31-2017 06:28 AM

Just booked site 75! Last years site (78) was booked yesterday. :( ! Are we being over run by SOB's or are the streamers not RSVPing? If anyone looks at the reserve America site, you will be shocked! Loop 103 is booked, as of today. Very few sites left, don't procrastinate!
Love to all :)
Billy and Karen

DLMueller 01-31-2017 07:53 AM

I was able to book site 101 in loop 103 this morning. Only one available in loop 103. We will be arriving on Dec. 31st and leaving Jan. 8th. Linda and I are looking forward to our second Canopener.

LOGUE88 01-31-2017 08:29 AM

I would like to correct my previous post. Noggin is correct, there will be some sites opening up tomorrow and later dates. I would check daily for new openings. By the way the reserve America site will not allow reservations before 8:00am est. as I found out this morning.
Sorry for the confusion!
Love to all

Something weird is going on. We had that site this year and wanted it next year. When I looked on the 27th it was available, as were most of the sites in the 103 loop. Just after midnight on the 30th when I tried, all but one site in the 103 loop were booked. Later in the morning of the 30th, that site and 123 showed as available. We got 123 so it's all good, but it's almost like the NYE SOBers are somehow booking a block of sites and then releasing them when people don't sign up.

Perhaps someone with a good relationship with the park (Joe, Annette?) could call and investigate.

Al

Noggin 01-31-2017 12:16 PM

The majority of those folks will be checking out Jan 1 or 2. Sites will be opening up. The park folks don't control the reservations and do not ever block sites for groups. Reserve America is the only way to get a reservation and it is one site at the time.
Sit tight. This will open up. RA is showing 51 sites open from Dec 29 for 10 nights.

Al and Missy 01-31-2017 11:20 PM

Initially it just seemed odd that all those sites were open on the 27th and booked on the 29th and then a couple opened up on the 30th. I guess the other group all booked as soon as the window opened for the 29th or the 30th and a few had to change their plans a day or two after booking.

As Joe says, there are still plenty sites available for New Years Eve and the rally, just not in the 103 loop, and when the window opens for after New Years there should be plenty sites in the 103 for the rally.

Al

Luckyducks 02-01-2017 05:47 AM

There wasn't a group - just SOBs for NYE. They are checking out Jan 1 - 3. As of right now, there are 8 sites currently open in loop 103. 5 more open tomorrow. 4 the next day. Rather than the "Campsite List" that Reserve America normally shows, click on "Date Range Availability" to see which days each site is booked for. Reservations start each day at 7am central or 8am eastern. The sites that open up in loop 103 will go fast.

Speaking of groups. There are 22 RSVPs for the Canopener but seeing the Date Range Availability it looks like closer to 50 reservations have been made on Reserve America through the Canopener weekend.

Noggin 02-03-2017 06:28 AM

We booked this morning. We are back in site 112. Arriving Jan 3. Sorry we will miss NYE this year, I know it will be fun again.

AWCHIEF 02-03-2017 07:23 AM

I just checked on Reserve America; there are 8 rv camping sites left now at Topsail Hill for the period Jan 4 - 8; you may want different dates, but if you guys want to join the group for Canopener, you will need to jump on it now. Canopener 2016 was day 2 of owning our AS; it was a blast and of course we attended the 2017 rally and are signed up for 2018. You guys will love it; there is not a bad site in the park, by the way.

tvketchum 05-14-2017 03:38 PM

I will second the idea that there is no bad site. However, some are a little better than others, depending on what you desire. We enjoyed 127 for all three Canopener we attended. Unfortunately, we will be engaged in other activities in January and will have to skip the 2018 festivities. So for whoever is on 127, don't be surprised if a hoard of pajama clad folks show up on Sunday morning wanting coffee!

Mrjkq 05-14-2017 04:39 PM

This will be our first can opener & looking forward to it.

Canopener 2018 Map Update - June 20, 2017

Hello 2018 Canopener attendees. I've just reviewed the RSVP page and found a few more signups for the rally since the last map update.

For those of you who are new, or have forgotten, a site reservation with the campground does not sign you up for the rally. To sign up for the rally you need to go to the official rally RSVP site. Scroll to the bottom of the RSVP page, click the "yes" button, provide your first names, your site number, and your arrival and departure dates. The rally organizers will use this information to put you on the map and produce name tags. It will also give us a count, which now totals 80 rigs. Here's a link to the RSVP page:

Canopener 2018 Rally Registration (RSVP)

I've updated the maps with the most recent RSVP's. If you are attending the rally, and haven't signed up on the RSVP page, please do so per the directions above. If you have signed up, please review your registration on the updated maps (links appear below). Some of you haven't provided first names on your RSVP. If you haven't you can update your RSVP to add information. In addition, if your plans have changed, and you won't be attending, please go to the RSVP page to cancel your rally reservation. Cancelling with Reserve America, or the campground, doesn't tell the rally your plans changed.

Here are links to the updated maps. Please send me a PM if you see an error.

There is no way to have a waiting list because Reserve America controls all reservations. Best way to is to watch for cancelations posted on this thread, there will be many before the rally starts. AWCHIEF calls it the silly season!
Good luck!

There are some websites which monitor for cancellations and will send email alerts if a site opens up. Wandering labs is one, which has pay and free options. We have used it with success, but, you have to act when you get the alert.

Campground site reservation cancellations occur periodically. You need to monitor Reserve America frequently. If the experience of past years holds true this year there will be 10-20 cancellations within 4-5 weeks of the rally start date. Typically campground site reservation cancellations appearing on Reserve America are taken quickly so if you see one, grab it.

As far as the rally itself is concerned, there is no wait list. The rally takes as many attendees as sign up.

In past years some Airstreamers who wanted to attend the Canopener rally, but couldn't get reservations at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, secured campsite reservations at Grayton Beach State Park which is only 8 miles from Topsail Hill, the site of Canopener. Others have come without their Airstreams and stayed at the cabins at Topsail Hill. Reserve America takes reservations for the cabins at Topsail Hill. Typically they are less difficult to reserve than the campsites.

Another camping option is a private campground, Camp Gulf, located about 5 miles from Topsail Hill in Destin.

Canopener Map Update

Good morning Canopener 2018 attendees and want to attends. I have updates to the campground maps showing Airstreams registered with the rally. Check out the links below:

Canopener 2018 Campground Map Sites 1-99

Canopener 2018 Campground Map Sites 101-168

If you don't see your trailer on one of the maps, you haven't yet registered with the rally. A campground registration is only the first step in attending Canopener 2018. You also have to register with the rally. Go to the rally registration site at the link below. Scroll to the bottom of the page, check that you are attending. In the comments box type in your site number, the first names of the people in your Airstream , and your expected arrival date. This information is used to make name tags, the rally maps, and for the organizers to have count for planning activities.

Canopener 2018 Rally Registration (RSVP) Site

We are less than six months away. If you haven't yet registered with the rally, please do so. We know the park is fully booked and there are quite a few spaces on the maps without Airstreams. Time to reveal yourselves!

If you see an error on the map, please PM me and I'll make the correction.

See you at Topsail!

SeiglerM 07-27-2017 05:51 PM

Is this open to anyone who would like to attend? We are from TN and are new WBBCI members.

Fully booked is right! Guess I'll just have to plan to attend for 2019 instead. Even if there are cancellations for 2018 between now and then, the waiting list on this thread is already pretty long, and they deserve a chance ahead of me. First come, first served, and all that.

With that in mind, the Rally organizers might do everyone a favor and cull this thread for people who expressed an interest but couldn't find a space, and list them in the order they posted. Then if someone does cancel, that person can PM the next person on the waiting list to give them the first crack at the newly available space before opening it up to the rest of us.

SeiglerM 07-27-2017 06:22 PM

Disappointed, as new members we are finding it tough to sign up for events as reservations are limited and popular. Will try next year.

AWCHIEF 07-27-2017 07:20 PM

Canopener 2018

There is no official waiting list. If any one wants to attend start checking the Florida State Park reservation daily. The closer we get the more people will drop out. Keep in mind that we are not the only ones using the park and those SOBs will be cancelling their reservations as the dates get closer.

For those who have booked at other parks for the Canopener and want to register for the Canopener, please go to the RSVP page http://www.airforums.com/forums/cale...y=2018-1-4&c=1 and at the bottom put your names, date of arrival, what park you are in and site number. Not sure we can do a map, but we can make a list so you are included.
We look forward to seeing everybody.

Reserve America just called and told me they are closing loop 100 from November to March. I had reserved site 8, but they let me move it to site 88.

They pulled this same trick last Rally. Work was postponed after complaints were made to them. I believe that loop 100 is the first section to the left as you enter. Looks like there are 21 spots effected by this closure.

white laker 08-25-2017 08:01 PM

I was talking to the folks at the park and they told me that only sites 1 - 24 will be effected. These are the sites in the first loop as you enter the park from the store to the showers. It looks like 8 or 9 attendees will be effected. I would call and raise hell with them to see if the could hold off on the work until the end of the rally. I cannot understand how they can take a reservation and collect the fees, then pull the carpet out from under you. Not nice!:angry:

NonnaAndPop 08-25-2017 08:05 PM

I got a recorded phone call today telling me Topsail was closing the Loop my reservation was on; I think it was the 100 Loop. We have site 9 listed, or at least we did. I thought the park is 100% Booked, so I'm worried we're being kicked out. What???

NonnaAndPop 08-25-2017 08:07 PM

Can the organizers of the rally fight on our behalf??? My hubs and I are supposed to be on Site 9. Does this mean we're kicked out???

Can the organizers help with the fact that the lark now wants to close one of the loops and essentially kick-out some of the Canopener attendees?

We will do what we can. Like last year, we got no advance notice and I doubt the ranger did either. Being a weekend, not much we can do until Tallahassee opens up on Monday.
Stay tuned,
Joe

AWCHIEF 08-26-2017 08:48 AM

On the Canopener Facebook page several have reported calling and getting moved to another spot. Seems really dirty for them to do this again after what happened last year. Seriously might be time to start looking for a new venue for this maxed out rally.

I'm wondering how they could get moved when cancellation vacancies are snatched up in mere minutes and the campground has been fully booked for months…

Beats me, you would have to call and ask. We are not the only campers there that week. People are constantly cancelling and the closer we get to rally time more spots will open up.

Seems that the park is full up at this point. Couldn't get a spot, so will miss it this year. Have fun! Nancy/Carl

AirHeadsRus 08-28-2017 11:32 AM

Say it isn't so!

Sadly but true, the 100 loop at Topsail (sites 1 - 21) will be closed throughout the winter months for upgrading to all theses sites. I spoke with the park ranger today and they cannot and will not delay or postpone the construction. I even asked them to release the sites they hold but alas, they could not.

SO, if you have a reservation for any of these sites you will, if you haven't already, be contacted by Reserve America canceling your reservation

BUT, here are two options: 1) contact Reserve America and check availability at Grayton Beach, a short ride from Topsail, or other private RV parks in the area. 2) be diligent about checking for reservation cancellations at RA that WILL certainly occur between now and Canopener. It will be business as usual at RA, which means whoever "snatches up" the cancellation First, Wins:shock: (There is no waiting list, nor has there ever been)

I'm sincerely sorry this has occurred, and it is possible, even likely, it may occur in the future as more sites are in need of upgrading.
I'll be posting soon with requests for volunteers, schedule of events, more requests and then follow up with more requests for volunteers:brows:

#51 divanko Cancellation

 Rec'd notice via email that my reservation for site #017 has been canceled because of maintenance of the Loop 100 starting Nov. '17 thru Mar.'18. The Topsail State Park is fully booked and I am receiving a full refund. Unless I luck out and snag a spot that comes open, I will not be attending this year. Thanks, divanko

tvketchum 08-31-2017 06:39 PM

The Friends of Topsail is the recipient of a lot of the Canopener fundraising. If anyone has pull to get the affected attendees relocated to a site not in the Reserve America inventory, it would be them. Every Florida Park has sites not sold through Reserve America, and Topsail has a few. I would suggest this approach rather than trying to strong arm the park into postponing work, which needs to be done.

What is annoying, they know they are closing sites for renovations, so they should plan better and restrict them from being sold in the first place.

ljsigman 09-01-2017 09:04 AM

How can I RSVP when there is no place on the page to enter text? We are staying at Grayton due to cancellation of our Topsail site.

Noggin 09-01-2017 12:49 PM

scroll all the way to to the bottom of the RSVP page and underneath everybody else you should see where to put your info.
