Deadbolt Lock - will not lock due to pin strike point
 
We have a 2015 27FB FC that I am having trouble with the dead bolt lock. The strike point is off - striking on the outward side of the strike plate. I can see where it hits by putting a little hitch grease on the pin. I have taken both plates of & put some WD40 in it which helps with the slide - but the pin has wiggle room & will not go into the hole without me pushing really hard on the outside of the door - but when inside the AS I cannot get the lock to engage. My guess is we must have slammed the door to close it with the pin out although I could see no signs that the pin is bent. Suggestions??

I am having same problem, the pin catches and won't lock properly. This is new 26U, problem just started. I wondered the same thing if door was closed accidentally with lock in closed position. The pin appears to have shift towards out side of door, thus not clearing properly

Hi - I had a misaligned door fixed at the factory. There's a YouTube video about how that's done - not for the faint of heart. I'm assuming you're still under warranty? Definitely bring it to your dealer's attention in writing while under warranty and get it fixed.

OK, things wait for the worst possible moment to 'strike'. It is 0 F in Denver, we came back to the coach, Saturday 8 PM and the door won't close. I have no idea why, there is no ice anywhere impeding this, but I can't hold the door shut, not even trying to close the lock. We can't do the full frame realignment by ourselves and tomorrow the weather will be even cooler. 'Stuff' never happens alone, also the furnace stopped working so we walked into 43 degrees F trailer. We are hooked to 30 AMP. Restarted a couple of times the thermostat and at least got that going. Any ideas?

I'm only spitballing here but if the door worked ok during the day, it sounds like the shell/door/doorframe got in a bind with the cold. Worse since the coach got cold inside as well perhaps?

My only suggestion would be to re-level the coach and make sure you don't have too much strain on any stabilizer jack. If the door started operating better as the coach warmed up then that reinforces a door bind.

I agree....would raise the stabilizers, try to close the door, re-level the Airstream....see if that helps??

I have done two things that fixed the problem you describe.

One problem was that the pin has a lot of slop in the guide that it sits in. It tends to move toward the outside and misses the slot that it is suppose to slide in. To fix that I found a small piece of plastic, like the smooth end of a plastic cable tie. I clipped it to the correct length and slid it in the slot in front of the pin. That holds the pin in place better, not allowing it to fall forward, and keeps it aligned with the slot when locked. It has been two years and so far the plastic is still in there doing it's job. Worked like a charm!

The other issue we had is that the door latch was slightly mis-aligned. There are some excellent videos on youtube that describe how to align the latch. It isn't elegant but it works. It usually involves whacking the latch with a rubber mallet and a large screw driver or blunt file.

Thank you, the advice should come handy next time the door does not close (tonight?) because after I called Coach Net and 3 RV service centers in Denver (some advertising emergency service) to no avail... removed the tape and the door now locks perfect as per magic! The trouble with trouble of unknown origin is that is likely to repeat, as usual at the worst time. For such emergency now I placed a bunge cord nearby, I can put one end on the door's handle and the other on the dinette table, will keep at least the door closed. As I read is a common issue with AS, I would hope the factory does something about it... (hope they are reading)

OK, tonite the same with the door. Opened OK, got in, can't close it... bunge cord running from door handle to dinette leg to keep it shut. This time the coach was kept warm, furnace was running. No idea what is causing this and when/if I bring the AS to the dealer they will think I am crazy as I won't be able to reproduce this.

If you pick up all your stabilizer feet, does that change anything?

Hi there. Sorry for all the trouble you've been having with your door and lock. On the last post, it says they pulled apart the lock and now it works...who did the work? A locksmith or RV shop? Also, who pulled the door off the previous time? I'm locked in with a deadbolt issue and unsure who to call. I'm hearing to remove my door and also to grease the key hole. Not sure what to do or if I should call someone. Thanks.

We had the same problem, in the death of winter with icicles on the outside -and us on the inside trying to stay warm keeping the door closed with a bungee cord attached to the dinette leg. From previous postings this is a common problem and it appears related with a shift in position of the stricking pin. The full rig ‘works’, meaning it expands, contracts and twists per changes in temperature and obviously when on the road per varying surfaces all 4 wheels plus the hitch. A dealer was able to fix it for us and other contributors to the threads suggested slamming hard the door, etc. One thing though for sure, if you will lubricarte any part of the lock, don’t use grease as it sticks to dirt, use graphite. We had the same problem with the deadbolt pin not in alighnment for whatever reason. We tried the suggestion of taking a plastic tie strip, cutting it to fit next to the pin and now works great. We were traveling for 2 months so that fix saved the day. I am going to try and attach pictures we took.

How does the plastic strip stay in place?

How did you know how long to cut it?

The plastic piece just slides in and stays in place and we trimmed it until the door closed without the piece hitting.
