Hi from Ontario, Canada

We have purchased our new to us 2011 30' Limited Classic "The Cabin". I cannot believe how much I enjoy camping in this AS. I vowed I would never camp again after our last rainy weekend in a tent. We have had a number of motor homes of different sizes and would go to Arizona for the winter, where we bought a park model in a 55'+ community. That lasted about 3 years as we decided we wanted to travel more. We have never pulled a travel trailer before and we are amazed at the convience over the motor home. (Less rattling noises) There is a lot to learn and need to get better with our turns. Hopefully that will come with practice. TV is a 2012 VW Tourag Turbo diesel. Pulls 30' fine.

So glad to have joined this forum. Interesting and informative members. Planning (wrong word as my husband likes not to plan) a huge trip to California, leaving Augs. 4th, wish us luck!

Hello from just down the 401!

Congratulations on your Airstream! :D We just purchased this year also and I had never towed anything quite this large before. I'm happy to report though that after a few practice sessions and one medium journey by myself, I'm already feeling pretty comfortable. Still working on perfecting the backing up, but these trailers really are easy to drive when set up properly.

Enjoy your adventures and update us on your progress!

Okay no trailer, but I know you'll dig my 310 turbo diesel.

Happy trails from Hillsburgh Ontario; keep the rubber side down.

One more welcome from Toronto! We're coming on our one year anniversary & still loving it. We're currently on our first adventure that's longer than a long weekend & enjoying every minute 👩*❤️*👩

We have been RVing since 1968, Airstreaming since 1978 and joined the Ontario Unit in 1983. We have been full-timing for the past 10 years. It has been a hoot! I recommend the Ontario Unit as a bunch of pretty good folks. Our WBCCI membership is focused on the Unit although we have been to a number of Region and International rallies in the past.

Welcome aboard.

We're from Barrie and Aug.13th we'll pick up our new GTour at an orientation in London. Pretty excited since we've only camped in a 2 person/1 dog tent or from our van or canoe in the past. Apprehensive about the electric system/s since no experience but looking forward to "glamping". Our first trip will be to the RV show in Hershey Penn. to check out "stuff" and then off to North Myrtle Beach for golf and dancing. Yes, retirement. If we survive the dog and no divorce there will be many more km. in our future.

Hello from Haliburton Highlands, have a 27ft that we are travelling with. Spending 2 months at home before we set out again. Arizona, California for the winter then who knows...
Happy trails and see you on the road.

Thanks for all the greetings and well wishes. Our summer 6 week adventure was wonderful. Mackinaw Island, Sturgis bike rally(a husband must see);best scenery in south Utah - Moab - Bryce Canyon - Zion Nation Park, all must sees. Through Colorado Rockies, Badlands, Death Valley. Grades where between 6-14 degrees and the Tourag TDI handle perfectly as did my driver. We had new back brakes but around Death Valley the Tourag informed us to get new front brakes, did that and felt safer. Yellowstone NP's Old Faithful just gave us a burb. Next summer Yukon, Alaska and NWT, with side trip to Oregon and Washington. Met a few full timers and they loved it. Safe travels everyone.

Roadroamin 10-18-2016 08:19 PM

So great to hear of your travels. We are in the midst of "planning" our trip to the south this winter. Hoping to hike the Grand Canyon, bike Moab and what ever else comes our way.

Consider a visit to Canyon de Chelly as well. It was a highlight of our trip to the southwest a few years ago. We hired a guide and drove into the canyon. Four wheel drive is required or you'll need to hire a guide with a vehicle. You can't enter the canyon on your own. Our guide, who was Navaho, was a wealth of information. We spent about 5 hours in the canyon. It was amazing! The best money we spent on the whole trip!

Anyone interested in meeting for lunch

For Burlington, surrounding area and anyone else:

Let us meet for lunch in Nov. I am thinking around mid Nov. Let me know. We would sure like to meet fellow ASERS. Carol and Dan

Catjer -- I am curious if you have any northern Ontario/QC camping to offer feedback on. I've often thought of making the "most northerly" road trips in Ontario (599 to Pickle Lake) or QC (James Bay Road to Radisson/QC-Hydro.)

And my earliest memories in life are staying with the family in Algonquin.

And Ontario gems or off-the-beaten-path locations we might want to consider within the forum audience? [Myrtle Beach doesn't count ;) ]

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your new Airstream! We're based out of Central Saskatewan. Our 28'FC has been a wonderful addition to our retirement adventures and could not be happier. If your ever in Central Canada, look us up.

2005 I took my mc to Radisson, camped beside road. Things could have changed since then but it was an amazing trip. The quietness and isolation was incredible. Lots of little side roads with wonderful places to camp.

catjer 10-21-2016 09:47 PM

Hi Ian,
We haven't RV'd in Ontario yet but have travelled in some parts of Northern Ontario. The north shore of Lake Superior has some beautiful views and there are some good Provincial Parks.
Pickle Lake and other Ontario northern areas offer good fishing and hunting and are more isolated. Since I don't know your interests I can't give specific suggestions about other locations. Glad to help if you get more specific about interests (beaches, biking, fishing etc)

I don't want to necessarily hijack the thread - but how do you think one would fare with a 28' Airstream in tow; not on the road - I understand conditions are variable depending on upkeep, but rather finding good locations to overnight, enjoy the view, etc., without getting myself into a situation where I'm stuck backing out a narrow path, etc.?

Ian

Roadroamin 11-04-2016 11:47 AM

2005 the road up to Radission was immaculate. I was there in the fall and the campsites were closed. I saw moose, bear and a beautiful wolf right on the road.
You have to use your judgement on the side roads, if they look wide and in good shape you will probably find a turnaround and have no problem. If not you get to practice your backup skills.
Getting a bit late in the year to go up there now.

Hi from Ontario Mohawk Inn meet up

Thanks to everyone who has replied. There will be a small group of us all eager to chat and ask questions about AS travel etc. Dan and I are looking forward to meeting you all. If I can talk him into it and the weather is dry we may bring up "The Tin Cabin". As I actually miss it.

See you Sunday, Nov 27th at 1 pm at Mohawk Inn, weather permitting for those of you traveling from up north.

Regards Carol and Dan.

KSA63 11-27-2016 08:04 PM

Rose and I enjoyed meeting with folks today at the Mohawk Inn. We are always happy to meet new friends and look forward to meeting with you all again. Next time we'll do something in our area 😎.

Hi from Ontario Mohawk Inn meet up

Dan and I are so glad we had the chance to meet you all. We had a good time, and are looking forward to meeting up again in April in the Orillia area. Thanks for coming.

carol1farr 11-28-2016 04:49 AM

As discussed at meet up:

"Crown land is no longer actively marketed, rented or sold for private recreational or residential use. Efforts are focused on working with northern Ontario communities and municipalities to make Crown land (excluding provincial parks and conservation reserves) available at market value to support local economic development." Source: Ontario.ca. Crown land management.

It seems you can buy, rent, lease for economic development ie survey building cottages, mining rights etc.

I am so disappointed.

Is the Eddie B the AS with the motorcycle garage in back? If so that is what my husband wants or should I say"needs" 😉😉

KSA63 03-17-2017 06:36 AM

Hi from Ontario, Canada

Hi Carol, I don't think the EB would support a large motorcycle (not likely even a small motorcycle). What Dan wants is a Panamerica. Quite rare and probably very pricey. Someone from Ontario was selling one fairly recently, not sure what the asking price was but it may still be for sale.

Hi...attached is a photo by a forum member, Screamstream. So yes you can load a motorcycle into an Eddie Bauer. Several members do and have described their experiences.

Just curious, what's the towing experience like pulling a trailer that you've just added 500+ lbs, all behind the axles?

Cheers

My understanding, whilst limited and likely flawed, is that the EB models are load biased on the assumption of carrying heavy cargo in the rear???? But that may have come to me in a dream. :)
