tongue jack is too short?

The tongue jack on my 67 Tradewind doesn't reach the ground when the trailer is level -- it comes within maybe 6 inches, then I get a hard stop.

Is this just a malfunction of some kind? I can't believe the original design included a jack that didn't reach the ground.

The previous owner was lowering the jack onto an 8x8 block of wood. I thought it was just to save time cranking on the jack handle, but...

Can these jacks be readily disassembled to inspect or repair? Or are they closed devices that must be replaced in such a situation? I'd rather not carry an 8x8 with me all the time.

Barker electric jack? They have upper and lower limit switches which can be adjusted/replaced. Somewhere I have a pdf of the procedure.

Click on the owner manual for superjack and scroll to retiming. IF you have a barker.

I would go with the 8 X 8, keeps the foot out of the mud. I use a 4X4 just toss it in the bed and tow on.

The jacks usually have an extension to add on. They are two part units. Jim

Mine came with an extension base, more basic but functionally like the silver one below. There are a couple of new ones on the market like the red one pictured that remain attached to the post and pivot 90 to be out of harms way for travel.

Some jacks have an extended-travel long shaft, like the one below, which extends 19-inches (most have 12-14 inches of travel):
