Engine/Year Trans/Year Matrix
I am working on an engine and transmission matrix for my site. I assume Chevy 454's were made every year. What diesel engines (turbo, non-turbo, size) and transmissions were made. Please respond with your year, model, engine type, and transmission. I am looking for STOCK and not modifications. Thanks!

1974 24 ft. Argosy-454, turbo 425

Believe it or not, the base engine was a 350, the 454 was a $261.25 option, per the original 'window sticker'. I don't know if there are any 350's out there, Airstream may have ordered them with 454's and just charged the same as GM when doing the option price breakdown.

1975 28 ft Argosy with 454, turbo 400 transmission.

I have see come of the 20 and 24 foot 74, and 75 coaches with the 350. I would be concerned about the power when fully loaded if I had a 350 in one of those coaches. Maybe it would be ok in the 20 ft.

great unit we love the floor plan.
Fred do you know how many 325 are members of the forum

1) When you say 475 or Turbo 425, is that the Allison transmission?

2) I don't know how many users there are for each model. One thing I always wanted to do was create a list of coach owners by model and year. I just don't know how people would feel about having that information in the public. Then again, the WBCCI directory lists the same information. I also never really had a grasp as to what media that list would be in. A web page (security?), a text document that I could e-mail to individuals, database...... I always thought it would be cool to know the other owners of 1985 345's.

The turbo 400 or 425 is the standard HD GM transmission. I do not know if the 475 is just a beefier model of the same tranny.

Iknow that the innformation on owner of models is available in public record, but I am unaware of a registry like you describe.

If it was secure I would not have a problem with it, I just do not want to get a bunch of junk mail because someone scarfed my info off the web.

Straining my brain because it is a long time ago, but I thought the 475 was the front wheel drive tornado trans.

One thought for you- how about doing GVW's at the same time. Wouldn't be that much harder to set up now, and would make a good addition for reference. Seems like something everyone is always asking (or should ask) when searching for a motor home.

82 310 Turbo
My 1982 310 Turbo Diesel was equipped with a 353 Isuzu Diesel with a modified 400 GM transmission. PS I got that straightened out. Joe:)

Is it 475 or 425
Sorry to take so long to reply.
Our transmission is a 425. I called the shop that just rebuilt it and made some improvements on it.
I was using the manual with the coach that reffered to the transmission as a 475.
My mistake

So the transmissions are either the Turbo 400 or Turbo 425? When some of you say 400 or 425, should I assume 'turbo'? Are they GM or Allison? Are they all three speed?

Except for the 95 and 94 years, are all the diesels made by Isuzu? I have noticed that some are turbo and some are not. What size diesels? All 353's?

Thanks for all your help. Hopefully everyone will benefit from the documentation that I'll be posting.

John, I'll get to the GVW info later. I've got a ton on my plate right now. Good idea though!

here is an original 1981 advertisement for the new Turbo diesel. Does that make it reasonable to assume that all diesels were turbo's?

I worked for Isuzu in the mid eighties, their engine is the one in the AS. All their NPR truck engines were turbo-diesel, and I believe they are the same motor. The NPR trucks are were cab and chassis with many applications, and the motors were known to go 300-500,000 miles. I understand the new Chevy DuraMax diesel pickups are also Isuzu diesels.

Isuzu Diesel
Our 1981 Excella motorhome has a normally aspirated 6BD1 Isuzu Diesel. Although the Airstream serial number identifies the motorhome as a 1981 the Chevrolet VIN identifies the chassis as a 1979 with a 7.4L (454) V/8 4-Bbl. engine. I read on one of the newsgroups that a subcontractor in Michigan pulled out the 454 and substituted the 6BD1 or 6BD1T (turbocharged) Isuzu before shipping them off to Airstream.

engine /transmission matrix
Great idea,I'm curious to know what engine and trans are in the various models...I would help out
if I knew how to identify the transmission,is there an id plate on it,or is it on the vin. in code or what.

I will be adding a 26' column soon and adding a 26' Argosy to the site. Thanks to Hayseed I have photos and scanned in floorplans for 20', 24', and the 26' 1975 Argosys.

'78 ARGOSY 28' MH

ViewRVs 10-14-2002 06:35 AM

Welcome to the group! I know you've found a great resource for your MH! :)

My hunch is to almost all of the MH's ended up with the 454 engine. I have seen some 20' Argosy's out there with a 350. You may have a chasis that originally had a 350 but someone swapped it out for the 454. Your 28' would really struggle with a 350.

stuart1 10-28-2002 02:25 PM

I don't know if this will help but the commercial Isuzu "F" series uses the same 6BD1 engine. Maybe their parts/systems are interchangable?

Duramax Diesel
ALANSD, the Duramax diesel is an Isuzu designed engine built by Duramax Ltd., a division of General Motors. The engines are manufactured in Moraine, Ohio, near Dayton. They are also making a 7.8 L engine for medium duty trucks, as well as the 6.6L engine for pickups.
